I'm not mad at all at Mahershala Ali's Oscar win, but the performance that made the biggest impression on me was by Andre Holland as adult Kevin. You could see so much written on that man's face as a result of his guilt for what he'd done in his life to fit in, his lifelong inner turmoil over his sexuality, and his eagerness for a connection. I was very impressed.

Janelle Monae for me, but Mahershala Ali and Alex R. Hibbert aren't too far behind. I think Moonlight's first third is near-flawless, but it keeps diminishing until it just peters out in the final act.

1. Rhodes 2. Ali 3. Sanders 4. Monae 5. Holland 6. Harris 7. Hibbert
All seven are fantastic with no weak links among them. Rhodes is my Supporting Actor win for '16, though.

Rhodes is my win for the year; he was stellar as the man-turned-hard and as the man-reflecting-on-past.

Mahershala Ali - he made a great impression. I´m not a big fan of his Oscar win, but I can´t complain, he was flawless

Ah, Moonlight. That movie means so much to me, honestly.
1) Rhodes (my favourite performance of 2016) 2) Sanders 3) Ali 4) Monae 5) Harris 6) Holland 7) Hibbert
They were all fantastic though. Hibbert gave one of the best child performances of the last few years.

Rhodes deserves more credit. He was an athlete before this movie and then he turns in a multilayered performance on the same level of every actor in the movie.

I think Moonlight's first third is near-flawless, but it keeps diminishing until it just peters out in the final act. I loved the final act because I found the interplay between adult Kevin and adult Chiron (or Black) effective. In terms of being a film that provides a portrait of a character going from a boy to a man, I prefer it to Boyhood. I really liked it and I am glad it kicked La La Land's ass at the Oscars.

Well, yeah, comparing Moonlight to Boyhood is like pistol-whipping a blind kid. I still prefer La La Land as an overall film, but I have zero beef with Moonlight taking BP.

This is why I love you, Carrie. The fact that Holland completely slipped under the radar for his turn here is criminal. Kevin is still somewhat of a cipher even in the final act, but Holland etches out the subtext of the character with an ease that feels disarmingly natural. I'd handily place him, Sanders, and Rhodes above Ali. Harris was hit-and-miss but her final scene is a barn burner. Monae was magnetic in her very limited role and if she'd been given more to do her I could see her easily eclipsing the latter. Rhodes and Ali were great, but they also had the type of characters and performances that people typically give shine to when reviewing the film while a nuanced performance like the one Holland gave gets less notice. I could look at Holland and see so many things going on with his character. I believed his struggle most of all. He is the unsung hero of the film. Oh and I think Monae is a goddess. Film could always use more of her.

So close between Sanders, Rhodes and Holland.
Gave it to Sanders for the poll, but they all rocked it.

PromNightCarrie I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about Holland. I wasn't surprised by Ali's awards sweep, but I kind of thought there would be more diversity in the love for different performances in the film, but almost no one said Holland even though I thought he was far and away the most grounded of the performances. You don't just read the past in his eyes, you can feel the future in his smile. As great as Ali was in the first third and Sanders in the second, that third sequence is my favorite because of Rhodes' scenes with Holland.

Ali by far, but I like the whole cast (minus Harris who hams it up too much when the rest of the ensemble plays it cool). That being said, I don't get all this praise for Rhodes.
