So, the big “SJW” Disney tentpole, written and directed by female filmmakers (one African-American), and led by a cast dominated by women... currently sits at 45%.Clearly that money Disney “pays off critics with” is well at work. I’m being sarcastic, of course. Normally I wouldn’t point that out, but there’s likely to be people who take me seriously. Damn. I'd been wondering why there weren't any early reviews yet. Although I guess now I can freely say how Selma wasn't really that good or particularly outstanding in terms of showcasing DuVernay's directing talents, other than some of the more visually intense moments, which is probably where AWIT's strengths lie.

I think Selma has more to it beyond that, but I won’t deny that those visceral moments are among the highlights of what made me love that movie (that same visceral visual style served her well for 13th). I’m still excited for it, regardless, but I wonder if this source material can even lend itself well to decent adaptations. More importantly, I just hope this puts the conspiracy theories that anything Disney and “SJW agenda shoving” only gets good reviews because they’re biased or paid off to rest.

Those trolls will keep peddling out those "Disney pays critics", conspiracy each time a new Marvel film comes out.

Co-signing everything Ryan said.
I'm legitimately surprised by this given how much love DuVernay's gotten from the critics in the past, even if I didn't really like the trailers much at all. I'm still gonna check this out for her. I loved Selma and 13th, and even I Will Follow, which was made for like 4 dollars and absolutely looks it, foreshadowed the good work that she'd showcase in the following years. I need to check out Middle of Nowhere sometime.

Yeah, this may even give the "anti-PC" side of the crowd something to boast about in addition. Plus those 'brought critics' didn't do a lot for some other recent movies like Oz the Great and Powerful, Tommorowland, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Planes, The Lone Ranger, Alice Through the Looking Glass, or The Finest Hours.

Suddenly I'm glad Ava DuVernay left Black Panther.

Suddenly I'm glad Ava DuVernay left Black Panther. I don't know. Under Marvel's direction it could have been different. Plus the book is hard to adapt anyway. I'm glad Coogler did Panther though.

The box office is important for this one. Look at what happened to the greatest showman, critics hated it but audiences disagreed with opinion. Ava, probably needs to stick with lower budget movies. Not everyone can make that transition.
