I've been writing a review for each of Nolan's films as I'm working my way through the pre- Dunkirk marathon. Here's my take on Following: letterboxd.com/matt_ineman/film/following/. A strong debut, though not particularly notable among Nolan's work in the grand scheme of things.

Love it, a masterpiece of type really in that it's created out of nothing but a striking premise and uses storytelling devices slyly to build momentum and its psychological depth too.
I'd rather watch Following/Memento/Insomnia than anything he made subsequently and no one has convinced me that he got "better" by making bigger movies - but Following especially is great because its so small and focused and not a mass entertainment in any way - that was when he really had it going on and he believed that too imo (though I still like every film he has ever made to some degree).
Following captures a trick of the best film noirs of the 40s, it gets deep under your skin and it speaks several simple truth in the dialog that hit like a hammer when you think back on them later ("Show them what they have ..........by taking it away" is especially marvelously sinister).

I liked the fact that it was in black and white and loved the interesting characters in this film. A good cast.

I haven't seen it in a long time but remember being fascinated by its premise and LOVED that it was a black & white film. 7.5/10

Solid low-budget directing effort from Nolan. 7 / 10
