What comes to mind for you? I just watched The Group (1966). Surprisingly, it's really underseen and has a rather grotty rep. Pauline Kael, who was on set, denigrated the film quite a lot during its production. I thought it was extremely well-acted and works quite well as a feminist pic as well as a doomy social satire. It's watchable (even at 150m length), amusing, with great period detail, and tackles several daring themes (suicide, mental illness, rape, abuse, etc). Also worth noting: it has a very positive and open lesbian portrayal. Sidney Lumet directed this beautifully, often lyrically, and right after The Hill - which couldn't be more different!

Great summary of The Group. I really enjoyed The Group it as well. Considering its neuteured reception I wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be a very engaging film.
Other great female ensembles:
Street of Shame (1956) -- chronicles a group of females working in a geisha house during a time when Japan was about to criminalise prostitution. Ensemble pieces aren't easy, but Mizoguchi is able to make each of the plotlines and central characters engaging in their own ways.
Flowing (1956) -- Covers similar ground to above, the two would make for a great double bill. Difference would probably be that it's a bit more stoic/pragmatic in approach. Wonderful line-up of who's who of Japanese actresses (Kinuyo Tanaka, Isuzu Yamada, Hideko Takamine).

I wouldn't call it underrated, but it isn't probably very well known in the US: Speriamo che sia femmina (let's hope it's a girl), directed by Mario Monicelli. Liv Ullman, Sandrelli, Deneuve, Noiret, Gemma, Blier, Cenci.

Gang of Four by rivette is quite mysterious and gripping, almost an anti-thriller of sorts. really great stuff.

I love Steel magnolias, but I wouldn't call it underrated. The movie and the actresses won / were nominated for multiple awards.

I love Steel magnolias, but I wouldn't call it underrated. The movie and the actresses won / were nominated for multiple awards. To only have one performance nominated in an ensemble of awards-worthy performances counts as underrated. Plus, the screenplay was snubbed by everyone including the WGA, it only has a 7.2 on IMDB (would be lower without female voters), and only a 69% on RT. It's better than it was given credit for.

How to Make an American Quilt All the ladies received a SAG award nod for best ensemble , though. But yeah , performances + movie itself are grossly underrated.
