Random thought I know, but it just occurred to me that the greatest talents maybe ever (barring obvious pre-20th century people like Da Vinci and Mozart) have come out of the state of Minnesota.
Think about it:
Judy Garland
Bob Dylan
Prince
The Coen Brothers
That's an outrageous amount of talent. I rank them all at the top of their categories (in fact, Judy Garland is my choice for greatest entertainer ever).

...........and that doesn't include Husker Du and The Replacements who I would rank at the very top of American Rock bands of all time too.
Must be something in all that snow.

Don't forget F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jessica Lange, Sinclair Lewis, Winona Ryder, and Charles Schulz. Oh, and the prettiest, too! Josh Hartnett and Cheryl Tiegs. I think it's the Swedish ancestry. What do you think of Hartnett's Minnesota digs?

I do remember you always being a huge Replacements fan. I'm not that familiar with Husker Du's music though. Any place I should start?

What do you think of Hartnett's Minnesota digs? Whoa. F. Scott Fitzgerald? He's not my favorite writer in the way that the names I mentioned are my favorite artists in their field, but that just adds to my point that Minnesota has been home to the greatest American talents.

@ carrie - Husker Du is hard to get a handle on unless you were old enough to make the journey with them when they were around (I resemble that remark!). They finished their career with 5 utterly unique albums, unique from each one that followed the next I mean. So they got poppier as they went along and if you were a fan of the band at the time that seemed a natural progression. For people looking back on them and trying to fit them into something easy to understand, well then it appears that was a sell-out but I don't agree.
The experts usually rank the most extreme artistic statements they made as the best music they made - the double album punk landmark Zen Arcade and the followup, the leaner and catchier New Day Rising. But for me I think the best music they ever made was in the middle of those "final 5" albums, 1985's Flip Your Wig which splits the difference between songcraft and power beautifully and then you can go to the earlier albums for their more punk rock fury or later albums for their yummy pop goodness.
The band had a problem in that basically they couldn't edit themselves - 5 albums in 4 years and 2 of those are double albums!! - but that go for broke quality becomes endearing the bigger fan you become imo.
Hope you like.....

My home . Yeah this place is awesome, and there is a long list of stars that would be considered great at their craft, but just about any state has that. I'd also include Garrison Keiller as best of his craft.

True, but what gets me is these people aren't just great, they are the GREATEST. Bob Dylan is the ultimate songwriter. And you can't get more talented than Prince or Judy Garland.

No Randy Moss or Cris Carter? Null and void. What are you talking about? For one thing, Randy Moss is country as hell and from West Virginia. We're not counting what sports teams you played for, so my post still stands!
