Kris Tapley's Midway Oscar Forecast
Mmm, interesting.
I wonder if this means that Roman Israel, Esq might not be that strong overall. Or if this is another sign of Sony being one of the most incompetent studios in Hollywood. Or if All the Money in the World is really a contender.
I think it might be the latter just because I don't have a lot of confidence in Ridley Scott especially after he just came off The Martian. Usually his record now is him having quite a few duds before having a success, but maybe this will be the Black Hawk Down except perhaps with acting nominations to his Gladiator. (Well I guess he did have films between this and The Martian and between Gladiator and Black Hawk Down but the point still stands that I have major doubts that he's going to knock it out of the park again so soon.)
I really wouldn't be surprised to find Mark Wahlberg is behind the push because he seems to have a lot of December releases that had buzz that ended up going nowhere. I guess Michelle Williams could still get in Best Actress though even if this isn't strong overall just because she's so well respected and Best Actress seems strong right now on paper but often by the end of the year, there's a scramble to find 5 decent AMPAS performances to nominate there. Plus, this could be the surprise Best Actress contender that many people have been waiting on; although, I think there's still a chance someone new could surprise from one of the fall festivals.
[UPDATE: Sony will be shooting for a December release of Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World,” starring Michelle Williams, Kevin Spacey and Mark Wahlberg, with Charlie Plummer as J. Paul Getty III. After “The Martian” sputtered at the finish line, leaving Scott without a widely expected best director nomination, there could be a lot of goodwill left over.]
