I liked You're Next & LOVED The Guest so hopefully this is at least decent. The director seems like he has a good eye for horror . Comes out on Netflix August 25th

I liked You're Next & LOVED The Guest Same here but the guy went on to direct the horrible horrible BLAIR WITCH, so I don't know what to expect.

I still have no idea what to expect based on this trailer. I do have to say Willem Dafoe looks intriguing as Shinigami Ryuk, as he does in every single role he tackles...and that´s about it

At least it's an interesting idea I guess, but I'm still seeing so many ways it could go wrong.

As someone who has seen the anime (but not read the manga):
This looks like a terrible idea all the way around. Willem Dafoe looks like he'd make a near perfect Ryuk (they should have toned the look into something less silly though -- Ryuk looks fine in cartoon form, but not live action), but outside of that...
The thing is, the original story worked because of its length. Kira and L could play long game chess that only got more complicated in moves and countermoves as it went on. You can't do that in a movie.
They're sticking with the "Kira and L are teenagers" gimmick that brought in the shonen crowd, unfortunately. That and L's Batman-like financial empire are the worst parts of Death Note. Still, this trailer isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Still looks formulaic as possible, but what can you do; the show was formula too, it was just formula that could use its long form format to keep the tension ratcheted high.

Doesn't look too bad, but outside of Dafeo as Ryuk, nobody interesting is involved or has been cast in this film. Not feeling this, it just seems like it might be another bad live-action anime / manga adaptation. Will see!

whoever that girl is, I can tell that she won't even come close to getting down any part of Misa Amane - the most underrated character of the franchise.
Btw, Death Note is my #13 of all time - that's including movies. So if you do the math, only 12 movies do I rank ahead of it.

I've only seen a few episodes of the anime but I'll give this a go.

Btw, Death Note is my #13 of all time - that's including movies. So if you do the math, only 12 movies do I rank ahead of it. The sadistic treatment of Misa (she's like Harley Quinn, only... she gets fucked around a lot more, both physically and emotionally) always bothered me in the show. She has the potential to be a great character, but I was always pretty uncomfortable with the way she's treated. There's only so much abuse she can take before I call foul on the writers for needless torture. But yes, this girl looks AWFUL. The fun part of Misa is that she was arguably crazier and more committed than Light, and here she looks like like an exposition spouting "Kira is god" type, instead of the broken little girl turning to Kira as her god because of events in her life and wholeheartedly embracing his doctrine, becoming his priestess. The anime version of Misa was SCARY, especially because she could be a perfectly normal, happy person whenever she wasn't under Light's control.

I do like Willem Dafoe as Shinigami Ryuk from the trailer, and the idea doesn't seem all too bad. But I still have my skepticism.
