A decent film with a lot of potential that was unfortunately not all used. I liked the simplicity of the story that allowed a lot of great characters. However I had a problem with the direction. While Sofia Coppola sure knows how to create atmosphere, I think she failed to emphasize on the characters, especially in regards of their development, motivation and conclusion. While there was a little bit of all of that, I felt we were missing a lot. Its almost as if that was intentional. Also I felt there was no real climax. Acting wise it was good. Colin Farrell was ideally cast and delivered an intense performance. I think his character was also the only one that was fully fleshed out. Nicole Kidman had a lot of very good moments and she was absolutely perfect for her role. Kirsten Dunst gave probably the best performance of the cast and one of her best performance in her entire career. Elle Fanning was also good but I felt her character was the least developed one. I liked the kids. Especially Oona Laurence. The look was good, great cinematography and art direction as well as good costume work. I just wished it wouldn't have felt so rushed towards the end. Still a decent film for a lot of good reasons. 7/10

I loved it. The best match of lushly directed and increasingly twisted. Coppola progressively winds up the tension like a fine clock, with the deceivingly idyllic atmosphere revealing something more and more sinister with each unnerving little movement, the urges of repressed sexuality bubbling to the surface in ways both blatant and subtle, and those pleasantries fading into pure vengeful aggression as earlier prejudices come back into full swing. And that ending was a glorious smack in the face, actually how you do an anticlimax right. Not just brilliant for the gorgeous final shot, but also in seeing how, or if, once strong bonds will ever be the same after such vicious events. I haven't decided on a cast MVP yet. It really is one of those ensembles where you look over each player and go "Who's the standout?" Wonderfully enthralling stuff.

Cant compare it as I haven't seen it, but from what I understand its the opposite perspective. I haven't seen the new one, but I think the original has been falsely portrayed. Coppola mentions how she wanted her version from the POV of the females, yet the original is also largely from the POV of the females (there's even interpolated voiceover from all of them). As an aside, I'm actually surprised Coppola isn't getting more grief from the critics for completely nixing the one black character (though I know Mick LaSalle pointedly calls her out, for one).

I saw this like two months ago but I'm returning here because it's a film that's really grown on me with thought. I liked it quite a lot when I first watched it, but the more I think on it the more I appreciate how rich, subtle and layered it was. I need to watch it again to be sure, but it's rapidly climbing higher up my list for the year just based on reflection.

It's about as good as the original - in general, imo.
The POV of the film is a lie really - as Mattsby said, the original has a feminist POV too. The Coppola film uses sly nuance more than the original and lacks its eerie menace. I'd recommend people watch both to immerse themselves in it but literally it's about as straight a remake as you'll ever see.

I think it might be the worst movie I've seen this year.
It's atrocious.

6/10
Despite strong performances from a talented cast, it's a flawed remake that doesn't live up to it's promising premise. Beautifully shot but shallow , it suffers from style over substance. From a technical perspective though , it is undeniably well-made.

It's.... okay. I give it a solid 6/10, mostly just for the performances and visuals. The movie felt very empty and dull as a whole.

Saw it right after FAR superior 71' version. Awful awful awful and pointless remake. Coppola took out the substance and inserted the random shots of trees instead. Paper thin characters whose actions make absolutely no sense and women come off as horrible sausage obsessed villains unlike in the original where the soldier manipulated them, here he did nothing wrong. Don't watch the remake watch the original instead.

Very mediocre. I liked Dunst in it though.
