Which do you think was the strongest? I go with 93 comfortably. Neeson, Hopkins and Day-Lewis are all time great performances in my opinion. Hanks was great and Fishburne is really underrated. Don't think there has been a better one since.

1999 for me. All of them are all-timers for me except Penn, who's still great. I went with 1999 too. I would have went with Crowe, Farnsworth, or Washington over Spacey, but he still gave a great performance. I also thought Penn's performance was great too. Maybe not his best performance which might be Dead Man Walking for me, but I feel like it's one of his most relaxed which is a nice change of pace. Anyhow the most important thing is that there's not a weak link among the nominees and I think that any of the 5 would have been a worthy winner. There's other years where there's like 3-4 great performances, but there's usually at least one nominee that brings down the whole lineup for me. 1996 and 1997 were the only other years where I liked all 5 performances, but I don't think the nominees reach the heights that the nominees of 1999 did.

1999 has the greatest performance of the entire decade with Farnsworth, but Penn's presence drags it down somewhat. 1993 and 1994 are devastatingly top-notch, even if the former lacks David Thewlis and the latter Gary Oldman/Tim Robbins. I'll probably give the edge to '93, but only just.
One thing is clear, though: 1991 is easily the worst, followed by '97.

1993 also gets my vote, all five of the performances are great indeed.

1994. Newman, Hanks and Freeman are all-time-worthy. And Hawthorne is amazing as well. Just Travolta is the weak link here.
1993 is at second place. All fantastic performances as well.

All fantastic performances as well. who would you nom instead regarding Travolta? curious. Well, for my own line-up I've Massimo Troisi for Il Postino there, which wasn't eligible at the Oscars that year though. But I still have Johnny Depp (Ed Wood), Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Gary Oldman (Immortal Beloved) and Ralph Fiennes (Quiz Show) ahead of Travolta. Not to say Travolta was bad. I like his performance, he's just weak compared to the four others in my opinion.
