The first 45 minutes are amazing, and the ending is extremely disturbing in the best possible way. However the Balthazar Getty stuff is pretty boring in my opinion, and Mr. Eddy is a discount Frank Booth.
8/10

I really, really love it. Although it doesn't pack the same emotional punch that Mulholland Drive does, Lynch's storytelling through the eyes of an unreliable/insane narrator is just as brilliantly executed, and all aspects of his direction are top notch, as usual. I could go on about this one all day, so I'll just leave it at that - just about a perfect movie that only gets better the more you revisit it.

I'm in the minority on Lynch but basically I think his pre-Mulholland Drive films were mostly warm ups for that. I don't really like much of his career prior to MD (and that for me included Blue Velvet) but I respect the uniqueness and depth of his vision still. In MD however it all came perfectly together, nothing extraneous, nothing weird for the sake of weirdness, it's perfect and a perfect representation of his artistry and I think he was helped immeasurably by the Hollywood angle too.
Lost Highway has a very memorable, very creepy Robert Blake and some jarring editing and camera work, but you can definitely see him working through some of the same plot points and themes he'd knock out of the park four years later.

I think there is an incredible cinematic quality about the imagery lead nature of the early stages, and I think the movie overall ultimately manages that greatest of all movie tricks, handling the most simple and everyday feelings and aspects of human society through the most strange and out there lens imaginable.

One of Lynch's best. I'll admit I wasn't completely engrossed the first time I saw it, but after a lot of reflection and a re-watch, I now see it for the damn near masterpiece that it is.

@ Ban -
Well I'm a fan of it at its best moments but its indulgent and again resorting to what my problem is with him which is weirdness for its own sake and a loss of coherence because of that. I think for those "Lynchian" type of films, that MD reached very great heights for what he tried to get across in that style a few times.........

My least favorite Lynch. The Bill Pullman stuff is quite good but once it gets to Getty, the movie loses its momentum for me. It just becomes quite tedious. It's also the only time I felt Lynch was being leery and exploitative. His critics often accuse him of that (even now with the new Twin Peaks) but I only felt that way with this movie.

It's a mood piece, a character study, a story to decipher, and a good old fashioned thriller.

It's like they checked the rottentomatoes or metacritic score before watching it. Out of curiosity I checked Lost Highway's RT score.... and 60%? The fuck is up with that? Even Inland Empire's score is 12% higher.

A good and underrated Lynch… always see it as his prologue to Mulholland Dr.

I think its concept is interesting and some of its scenes are among the best of Lynch's filmography, but the film as a whole doesn't come even remotely close to the visual and emotional impact of his other works. Robert Blake's part is the best thing about it, and deserves its place among the creepiest and most memorable Lynchian characters.

Aside from Dune, it's my least favorite Lynch film. It has some utterly masterful elements (namely the first thirty minutes and bits and pieces of the rest), but I simply didn't find any of the lead characters compelling. It's the only film of his that feels tedious and limp instead of alive and dangerous. Getty was unbearably dull. I think the fact that I watched the clearly superior Mulholland Drive before Lost Highway made it look like an interesting but cold rough draft of a masterpiece. It's certainly not a bad film, it just pales in comparison to his surrounding works.

It's good, like most Lynch films a lot of it doesn't make complete sense, but I do think the performances and atmosphere are really strong as per-usual.

Underrated when you consider the extreme amount of love Mulholland Drive gets. I don't think Lost Highway is that far apart from it.

Great stuff, but by no means Lynch's best or anything.

I too thought Lost Highway was pretty damn good. Didn't quite get all of it but it was interesting/entertaining and Blake was creepy as fuck. The first time I ever saw Lost Highway was all alone in the middle of the night (while I was high as hell on some great chronic ) and it definitely fucked with me. 8/10

It's by far David Lynch's best film and definitely his most allegorical. A masterful study of the subjectivity of memory, the denial of guilt and the refusal to admit past mistakes.
