Not sure how this is going to be received by critics, I'm not expecting raves but Jake Gyllenhaal absolutely kills it. I was floored.

Was David Gordon Green possessed by the spirit of Peter Berg in the making of this film?
Gyllenhaal looks committed, but man, you could play Oscar Bait Bingo just from the trailer itself.

Patriots Day is actually a better film and I see that only managed a 69 metascore. Hard to see this one fairing better than that but I can see something like Jake Gyllenhaal getting a SAG nomination since there's at least three contenders that I doubt will get screeners out in time.

Yes, I'm getting shades of Bleed for This's trailer for last year; although, I'm sure that this will be better received than that was. I don't see it contending for any major awards though unfortunately because I would love to see Miranda Richardson be nominated again and win. Maybe this will be a relative success at the box office though and lead to better roles for her again.

Looks very baity. Jake is getting in. He's been well liked in the industry and nearly got in for Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals.

I can't be the only one who lost their shit at 1:59. It looks okay. Even Gyllenhaal didn't impress me that much, but I'm willing to chalk some of that up to the trailer itself not being particularly well put together.

He was snubbed for Nightcrawler after hitting all precursors, and didnt nearly get in for NA when all he got was a BAFTA nom, and the movie failed to even get a screenplay nom

That was probably just a result of BAFTA liking him and the film more man than other award groups. I think I'm going to predict him for this though as it's easily his most awards friendly role and one of the most baity parts in contention. These parts are either ignored entirely or land the nom, the one recent exception that stands out in my mind is John Hawkes in The Sessions.

Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals are not really Oscar friendly films either. This is probably his most Oscar friendly role, so I'm thinking he gets in.

I used to say the DGG was too weird, too much of his own thing to make a formulaic movie like this so why do they hire him?
Looks like I was wrong because I can pretty much guess every scene in this film and how I'm expected to feel about it. Jake looks on form but I think movies like this aren't passing my BS detector test these days.

Is there a weirder filmography in contemporary movies than David Gordon Greene's? All the Real Girls and George Washington are masterpieces. Then he's made a bunch of shit, a few good ones here and there, and now trash like this? What in the fuck.

That's not the best logic when it's the only precursor you get Was Julie Walters in contention because she got a BAFTA nom for Brooklyn

Patriots Day is really a lot better than people give it credit for. But, yeah... this looks pretty awful.

Being in the conversation and nearly getting in aren't exactly the same thing. How often do sole BAFTA nominations translate into Oscar nominations? BAFTAs Denzel bias is the only reason he got the nomination in the first place and I think Edgerton would've sooner snuck in if anyone managed to break through what felt like a pretty set top five.

Jeff Sneider @theinsneider Hearing STRONGER features a very good Jake Gyllenhaal performance but that it's not quite the stuff Best Picture nominees are made of. 3:22 PM · Aug 23, 2017
Very good is an understatement. I cried TBH 😭

I'm pretty interested in this purely because his name is Jeff Bauman which is coincidentally also my uncle's name. Sadly nothing in the trailer grabbed me in the way I was hoping it would.
