Prodigy of Mobb Deep - one of the best hip hop acts of all time just passed away at only 42. I know that he suffered from sickle cell anemia - and a really aggressive form of it too. He once told a story about being at a concert and suffering from what is called a sickle cell crisis that had him screaming non stop because he was in so much pain and the late Big Pun started crying because he was so disturbed by seeing him like that.
Rest In Peace, Prodigy.

Been listening to him all day. I'm fucking broken. His verse on Shook Ones is my favorite of all time, and that's the song that made me take hip-hop more seriously at a young age. Rest in peace to an absolute legend.

You really feel like you're in the grimy streets of Queens when you listen to it. It's a masterpiece. And yeah, his voice was so memorable. I imitate it all the time.

Even though I think Pharrell is a genius and I love RZA, that dark, grimy sound is why Havoc is possibly my favorite hip hop producer. Mobb Deep sounds like the street storylines on the Wire put to music.

Shook Ones (Pt. II) will always remain one of the greatest of all rap songs for a lot of different reasons - the beat has been used a lot but it still gives you chills in that song...........the lyrics are flat out perfect in what they're trying to get across, Jay memorably included it specifically on the devastating Mobb Deep diss verse on The Takeover (itself one of the greatest ever tracks), etc. But Shook Ones still sounds fresh, vital and terrifying now all these years later - it's just a brilliantly put together track.
Sad to see him pass so young ......

I wanted to say salute to Kendrick Lamar for his classy words about Prodigy inspiring him in his speech at the BET awards. I only wish Prodigy could see the love he's getting now.
And fuck TMZ for trying to sensationalize his death with the "choked on an egg" headline.
