Those reactions (I know, never reliable, but if they are validated) are best of the year good. It's an easy win for VFX and as a war movie, Sound is a true threat. Giacchino's got career best notices. But it seems Reeves has accomplished something absolutely remarkable here and if Dunkirk disappoints, it may be the favorite "blockbuster" contender of the year.

I don't know if I'd go that far. Both Avatar and Fury Road were phenomena in a way that very few films of their ilk are. One is the highest grossing film of all time, which also pushed the boundaries of visual effects and 3D in general. The other was among the most critically beloved films of the year and perhaps the most critically beloved action film of the last twenty-five years, if not of all time. I am excited to see War of the Planet of the Apes and I think it's in with a shout for the tech nods, but I don't see it being the runaway juggernaut those two films were.

Wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be my favorite summer blockbuster, but I'm always wary of considering franchise fare award contenders. Fury Road was a special case in that it was a reboot of a series that was never one of the most popular franchises and its huge critical success came as a pleasant surprise. With Apes, there will be no surprise. The franchise is well-established and was even before this reboot series came along, and the bar of quality has been set. It would need to surpass that bar by so much that the film picks up enough steam with critical awards to keep its name in the awards hunt.
For the record, this is generally why I'm skeptical of Blade Runner 2049's awards chances.

If neither of the prequels were, I couldn't see this one being it. A VFX win is the farthest I can bet for it, with maaaaybe a Sound Editing nom.
Would be cool tho, but there's Blade Runner 2049 with the sky-high expectations. Even if 2049 disappoints in the circuit, they would split. Cannot see this as the bigger juggernaut.

I seriously doubt it gets in for anything but a few techs.

Nope, but it might finally win VFX.

If it is as great as I'm hoping, then I would love to get on board and say yes, it'll take a bunch of nominations, but I just don't see the several nominations coming, whatever the acclaim for that film.
