Doesn't seem like the kind of performance that would win. I personally prefer Stapleton.

Hayes's performance is appropriately feisty, as you'd expect from an adorable old lady who sneaks onto airplanes. It isn't that her performance detracts from the overall piece, but I just never cared for the film itself (really, this is the film that broke Spartacus's box-office record?). She has her moments of charm, but really, there's no way that I can take her performance as a serious Oscar contender when she's practically giving the camera the sly side-wink every six seconds. Once was fine. Twice, okay. But when the entire performance consists of that self-awareness, it's no longer a performance, but rather a parody of one. She veered from adorable to annoying and back again, until eventually, you can't tell one from the other.

I was very surprised when I realized it, She's the Jack Palance of the 70s Oh honey, Jack Palance was never a First Lady of American Theatre... or if he was, he kept it secret.

Every expression and gesture from her are priceless.

Its slightly better than Margaret Rutherford's win for The V.I.P.s.
