Name the directors who can make the macabre look like art. Who treats the dark with utmost respect. Who breathes life into the dead. Who paints their movies with passion.
(Mention the movie names too if you like)

I think of specific examples like Polanski's The Tenant, Argento's Tenebre, DePalma's Blow Out. All of those films have a delicious nasty streak in them that in its loosest form we'd call humor but it so dark as to be pitch black. I think of them as pulp high Art that inspired something new and unique in their wake (the also great Spoorloos and Oldboy etc.).
That is the kind of stuff that not only do I like, I think it disturbs more than what we might typically refer to as horror although typical horror has its place to in this discussion too. Wes Craven made several films over several years which seemed to reinvent his take on horror with each new one (Last House On The Left, Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream).

I mean, this is Nicolas Winding Refn's bread and butter.

Dario Argento is pretty hit or miss for me, but when he hits, he nails exactly what you're describing. Suspiria is such a great film.
