is the first Woody Allen movie to disappoint me... It felt really hollow, with wooden acting and stilted dialogue with a plot that went nowhere. You know a movie has failed to grab your attention when suddenly you find yourself more interested in the set & set dressing (gorgeous!) than in any of the characters. Dull.

I thought it was rather lovely. It's a love story in the same way that Crimes and Misdemeanors is a crime story. It isn't about the love itself, but how you deal with it when it is over. Allen never looks down on any of the the characters. They make decisions, they make mistakes, they do good things and bad things, and his gaze is always level, and always a bit compassionate.
Sure, the B-plot with Ben wasn't strictly necessary, but it played into the style of the movie (if not the themes) very well.
And yes, the sets were utterly gorgeous and I wish I could live in them.

one of Woody's stronger films of the 21st century.

The visuals are really great. I really liked the whole love story with the touch of comedy in it.

Yep, a low point in Allen's career ( alongside the Cyrus mini series ). It was downright stupid and tedious with one of the worst uses of narration ever commited to screen. Stewart was the only decent thing about it, everyone else was just "pretending" to be in a Woody Allen movie. And no matter how great and a legend Storaro is, his work in this film was unremarkable.

It's a shocking return to form, even though I didn't care at all for some of the narrative sidebars. The one thing I'd change: Woody should have gone for Rachael Price's version of 'I Only Have Eyes for You'. He probably could have played it over the end credits, too. His best film since Anything Else. Ranking: 9/47.
