Thoughts on The Birth of Nation (2016)? I watched this last night, and I thought it was a good movie. This one made me cry a little too because I thought the depiction was a bit more brutal and raw compared to other movies about slavery like 12YAS. It's such a shame that Nate Parker and his partner are awful (especially his partner who doesn't seem remorseful at all unlike Parker) because it deserved a BP nom, and I would nominate Parker for Best Actor. He's really talented imo. I saw him before in Arbitrage and thought he gave a good performance.
Also, I really wish we could've seen more of Gabrielle Union. It sounded like her character would be notable, but she wasn't. She didn't speak and was in two scenes.
Anyway, overall, 8.5/10
On a separate note, is it bad that I think Parker can be rehabilitated and redeem himself? I do believe that his comments (though he made missteps) were sincere and honest, and I think he does recognize rape culture and toxic masculinity and all that. What he did was inexcusable but I don't think he's beyond a second chance. His partner on the other hand though...he seems like a POS

Welcome back babs!
Re: TBOAN...I haven't seen it yet, so I have no opinion about the film itself but Parker's addressing of the allegation in the media always rubbed me the wrong way and came off as callous and self-serving. I guess he said some more stuff about the issue that I haven't seen yet.
To be honest, there are other films about America's race problems that I'd prefer to watch instead. I haven't been convinced by the film's critical reception to bother with it. There are other films out there that cover similar themes. I watched Malcolm X a few weeks ago and that was quite good.

My thoughts on the film after I saw it: "Hammer coaxes a surprising amount of humanity the debauched scion of a respected plantation owner whose farm falls into disrepair when he takes over, and he makes us wonder if his boozing is the result of self-loathing at the generation-instilled societal ills he continues to perpetrate." I didn't get that from Hammer's performance tbh. "nevertheless belts out a strong message that resonates with great gusto in today’s climate." That is one of the reasons I liked it is because of the message which is so applicable to today. The message about fighting back your oppressors especially using violence, and the point Tuner made about strength in numbers and a domino effect is something I agree with

It is not perfect, but it is interesting and a movie I think everyone should see and at least be informed on.

Parker's performance is terrific, but his direction is a mess of overbearance and cheap symbolism. It's like he couldn't find the honesty of the story and character. The message also teeters into straight uncomfortability. Turner is a tragic figure, but what he ended up doing in the end wasn't necessarily the correct human choice, and that's what's sad (that he believed it was all he could do) and the movie makes his choice of leading a white genocide seem like a good thing, especially as it treated most of its white characters like super villains.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT?! The white characters were fucking evil slave owners. How the FUCK were they not super villains? Are you fucking high bro? And white genocide? What white genocide? It was about SELF DEFENSE against OPPRESSORS aka SLAVE OWNERS. It didn't say kill all white people. What a stupid thing to say. Are you jakesully or something?
