Same ranking as Taran, actually.
1. Hepburn 2. Wood 3. Page 4. Laurie
Numbers 1 and 2 are all-time favorites, and for a long time they were my winners in a tie. I saw The Hustler a long time ago, and I barely remember Laurie being in it (is she really lead, though?). I have yet to see Loren in Two Women.
My lineup:
1. Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's 2. Natalie Wood, Splendor in the Grass 3. Harriet Andersson, Through a Glass Darkly 4. Shirley MacLaine, The Children's Hour 5. Marilyn Monroe, The Misfits

Numbers 1 and 2 are all-time favorites, and for a long time they were my winners in a tie. Right? I just love them both so much. It doesn't help that Hepburn and Wood are my two favorite actresses.

This is a classic year. Everyone take note. You had Godard, Antonioni, Resnais, and Bergman. The foreign arthouse was pouring and yet none of them even make my lineups. Moreau was good, but it's not like Vitti didn't own her in her brief little scene stealing time. The Hollywood girls were in full form though..... Monroe, Wood, and Baker all took part in it this year, which was that mini-wave of early Americana which seemed to be at its foremost peak in 1961.
My nominees: 1. Sophie Loren - Madame 2. Piper Laurie - The Hustler 3. Sylvia Pinal - Viridiana 4. Natalie Wood - Splendor in the Grass 5. Marilyn Monroe - The Misfits 6. Deborah Kerr - The Innocents (I can't believe one of these girls actually misses.... just to show how loaded some years are)

Haven't seen Page and Wood yet but the other three... it's difficult to chose one, Laurie last and maybe, just maybe because I think of many other performances of that movie before hers, but still, she has such a great presence. Queen of melodrama in one of her best, but I go with Hepburn, her chemistry with Peppard is for the ages, so bright and luminous that only enrich the "dark side" of her character, is iconic for a reason and have no reason to question that general consensus.
