Yeah, how much credit do you even give to this guy? It was Selznick’s movie, three different directors worked on it, and I’m pretty sure it’s said that Cukor continued to privately direct Leigh and de Havilland even after he was off the movie. So, um… I’ll be generous and say 7.

Aware it's a producer's movie but visually it's just majestic by any standard, and for it's time it was so far ahead of everything else it's hard to even imagine how people perceived it. Odd to make a Wizard of Oz analogy with it coming out the same year, but this really feels like when movies took the leap from Kansas to Oz so to speak.

Fleming was the director for the majority of the film regardless, and yes Selznick was the "auteur" however EVERY DAMN FILM is a collaboration and whatever Fleming's exact contribution was, he obviously did his part with how the film is a singular achievement regardless. Cukor wasn't the director when production actually started, and so what if he did coaching, actors commonly have coaches, do we knock on a director every-time that happens? And Sam Wood wrapped it up when Fleming was exhausted (which doesn't sound like the situation for a guy who was doing nothing), almost sounds like a 2nd unit direction, do we knock on a director who uses 2nd Unit?

Not a film I particularly care for but that's largely the script's doing. The film itself is pretty sumptuously filmed and production quality across the board is top shelf. It's also an overly long and disjointed film - I really just can't give a shit in the second half - and the distasteful cultural revisionism may be of its time but that's not really something I care to excuse. I don't care to imagine how I would feel about the film if I were fine with its racism (though it'd still be too long and disjointed).

Plenty of those 80's and 90's winners were studio Oscar bait and no one was really docking them any points for that and this is way better directed than those anyway.
