This is another "locus of control" discussion on the definition of direction. Kazan didn't write the script and this was Darryl Zanuck's baby so he didn't get a whole lot of input aside from just being hired to be the director and set up the shots and work with the actors. He wasn't an auteur here. Those elements of the movie are perfectly fine, albeit not great, so don't really think it deserves a low score.

I don't think the performances, aside from Celeste Holm, are particularly good and actively frustrate me in Peck and Revere's cases (although I do not generally care for the latter), and considering Kazan's rep as an "actors' director", I feel fine dinging him here for that.

4, Kazan's direction is staid and lacks the rawness such subject matter should contain...Kazan more or less said this himself. Feels like very standard studio fair, despite the subject matter, with most of its choices lacking any sense of Kazan's typical voice. And he even amplifies the preachiness of the material by the way he let Peck be so one note here (much preferred Peck as an older actor) especially the way he would have the camera sit on his disapproving face, as though Peck's antisemitism sense was tingling throughout the film.

4. I agree that as a hired hand you can't blame him for much beyond competence of construction, and also that given the difficulties of its production, and the pathetic sensitivity surrounding its subject matter, it is hard to blame it too much for being a soulless PSA designed to avoid offending people that deserved it.

Still, as has been pointed out, Crossfire pulled off comparatively much more that same year, two of Kazan's previous three films were good/great and so offer reason for expecting more than the utterly banal from him behind the camera, regardless of what the screenplay is doing.

Also, it has a pretty stacked-up cast, and... I don't know, I don't remember liking a single one of the performances. That can be put at his door. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was a melodrama, but it wasn't as laughable as this is. Boomerang dealt in relatively delicate real-world affairs, but wasn't as gutless as this. Embarrassing movie not saved in any regard by the man behind the camera.
