I had written several paragraphs for each one, but then along the way I realize that I feel pretty much the same way on all of them. Which is to say, they're really good in certain projects but I find most of their Oscar-tangential performances to exhibit some of their very worst tendencies, and I'd argue some of their career nadir performances were nominated, almost exclusively off the backs of perceived "overdue" narratives.

For me, that's the only actively "bad" nominated performance of the bunch. To think she was passed over for 20th Century Women, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, and The Seagull... for that.   |

See, this is where we differ because I think Nyad is far and away the best of Bening's nominations. I mean, it's a low bar for me because I like her fine in The Grifters, she's okay in American Beauty but she doesn't really stand out as much on rewatch for that movie, she's horrid in Being Julia and I really don't like her in The Kids Are All Right. I do think she would've been worthy of a nomination for 20th Century Women over Meryl and maybe Portman that year, but I did not like anything she was doing in Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool and I straight-up forgot she's even in The Seagull.

stephen - I definitely think we've established over the years that we have wildly different tastes.  I know you hate Adams in American Hustle and Williams in My Week with Marilyn, too, and I quite like both of those turns (even if they wouldn't appear on my personal ballots). I generally love Bening and was fully expecting to root for her awards bid for Nyad... Ah well. I'm always interested in reading differing opinions, though!

Deborah Kerr is better than all of these people except for possibly Amy Adams. Who looks like she may end up going down as "the next Kerr" both for being supremely dignified and never winning.

1. Amy Adams - Love this queen. Hope Nightbitch works out and she finally exits this list.
2. Glenn Close - I like her in general, though I don't love Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons as much as others do.
3. Michelle Williams - I find her talented but she can be a bit annoying off screen.
4. Annette Bening - Meh.
5. Bradley Cooper - Bad. Deserves a grand total of 0 nominations.

1. Close
2. Bening
3. Adams
4. Cooper
5. Williams
Williams is such a mixed bag for me. Love her in Blue Valentine and Fosse-Verdon but not so much in Fabelmans or Marilyn, and she felt kinda phony in Brokeback and Manchester (especially in the latter acting against Affleck). Not sure where I stand on her.
Close is in a league of her own.
btw I've been thinking about Albert Nobbs lately and how hard Close and McTeer had to elevate it. I'm always fascinated by performances that play with gender (Swinton in Orlando, Blanchett doing Bob Dylan, Linda Hunt in Year of Living Dangerously, Yentl) and Nobbs for all its faults deserves a place in that conversation, especially for the acting. I remember seeing the trailer in 2011 with that Sinead O'Connor song and being hooked. The idea of this character having to hide who she is in this dangerous world of male violence and exploitation (but you see her true spirit come through in the scenes with Wasikowska) is so moving, but the movie doesn't fully realize it.

I like Bening the best from this bunch, her energy is going to spice things up no matter what. I actually loved her in Nyad, as Theron said it on oscar night, she made her performance visceral, and I admire how far she goes to play unlikeable characters, Nyad being the crowning achievement in that. I think all her nominations are deserved considering what the Oscars had to choose from in those respective years and I don't think she has received a compromised nomination as most of the other actors from this group.
Also love Williams but she tends to be magnificent is just a certain type of roles. Close is Queen of course but 75% of her nominations do not reflect that, Adams had her run but most of her nominated work is filler (looking forward to her nightbitch!!!). Cooper being here is a joke. Who is he ??
