saw this a couple years ago and it was truly painful to sit through. Minnelli was working with some pretty ingredients (cinematography, costumes and sets especially) but the story and songs weren't it, and it was especially strange how lifeless & awkward everything felt given the other films (musical films especially) Minnelli had done that decade. ~~2/10~~

make that 1/10. Gigi sucks

I have no understanding of why so many of you guys hate this movie. :confused:

I found it extremely charming. In fact, I really like Meet Me in St. Louis (a deserved classic) and yet I think I liked Gigi more.

Fine, make it an 8/10. I think it's your standard well directed MGM musical even if some people find the premise off putting.

But think of how amazing it would have been if everyone except Stephen rated it a 10 just to troll him.

Wrong again except on the premise part, however even then the director can choose not to do such a project. If you're going to interpret direction that comprehensively it might as well just be "rate the movie" and not "rate the direction"

Minnelli has to also bear some responsibility for how bored and lifeless the acting is, especially from Chevalier and Jourdan. I mean Jourdan actually has a whole musical number about how bored his character is, you can't make this stuff up. Coming from the guy who directed the dynamic and flashy American in Paris and Band Wagon, it felt like everyone outside of the costumers and set designers was asleep at the wheel for this one. The premise is deeply unappealing but it's also one of dullest musicals I've seen. Prettier than My Fair Lady but no less stuffy and boring.

Speaking as someone who abjectly despises the movie more than probably anyone else here, I don't do it just because of the subject matter. I find it unpleasantly garish to look at (with some of my least favourite usages of colour palette in the Technicolor era), and the performances are intolerably listless (and I generally like all of the actors who are in the movie), all of which are the responsibility in some form or fashion of the director. Minnelli had to approve the visual tenor of the film and (along with the editor) picked the takes that were ultimately in the movie. You can argue that he was following a formula, but it's an excruciating example of it.
