In his 40's films Wilder was really ahead of his time with his compositions, particularly in how he'd use the entire frame. Outside of Orson Welles not sure how many American directors were doing that at the time. Like in the supermarket scene in Double Indemnity, I think most directors back then would have just had a master shot and then cut to close ups of other people staring at them. It's so much better to fill the scene with people in the background like he did and have the audience noticing they're drawing attention at the same time the characters do.
