I haven't seen a couple of the earliest winners in this category (gotta change that before those rounds come about) but from the ones I have seen, which is the vast majority, this one's probably my least favorite. I get what Richardson is doing but I don't like how he's doing it at all. The crudeness and clumsiness of it all, the annoying affectation which is meant to breathe some new life into the costume movie but instead makes it almost intolerable. Even that famous eating scene... I understand why it's so well liked but I just can't help but find it unfunny, irritating and even somewhat vomit-inducing on a purely physical level (especially with those slurping sounds... yuck). I haven't seen the movie in a looong time so maybe I'll change my mind when/if I revisit it, but right now it's among my least favorite Oscar flicks and the direction is the primary reason for it.
