My favorite best director winner and the best directed movie of all time possibly outside of 2001. Does all the little things right, the best compositions and use of space I've ever seen in a movie, great use of light, perfect use of visual motifs like water and all the tight shots of people's faces when they feel trapped. You could teach an entire class on directing just using this the way some people do screenwriting with the Chinatown screenplay. Just about every scene you could pause it and pretty much say "this is exactly the way you should do it" as a demonstration of one filmmaking technique or another.

No idea how this isn't getting 10s across the board even if you personally like something flashier or don't care for the movie for other reasons. I know some people criticize some of the story choices in the second half which is why some people don't like the movie but that's got nothing to do with the direction, that's the script.
