I'm going to watch the director's cut on the big screen soon, and I'm really excited. I know we have a lot of Ridley fans here, so what say you?

It's fantastic, but it really suffers from having a pretty wooden lead in Orlando Bloom. He tries his best but you can't help but wish that Ridley had allowed Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who is in the film in a very minor role) to play the lead instead, as we know he would've been very capable.
But yeah, you're in for a spectacle.

The theatrical version was okay, but the longer one well and truly turned this into one of Ridley's truly great movies with so much going on at such incredible scale that it's sort of dull leading man barely even matters.

This is perhaps the greatest example of the director's cut being vastly superior to the theatrical cut. It really does make all the difference.

But yeah, you're in for a spectacle. He could have cast half the guys in Black Hawk Down in that movie as the lead and it would have been better. The directors cut is a prime example of a masterpiece held back by the lead. |

Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson make a LOT of choices in this movie And I love them so much for it. Gleeson's so dastardly as Reynald de Chatillon but that guy was a bastard of the highest order, and Gleeson tears into the scenery like it's mutton. And Irons is clearly having a blast as Tiberias. I think David Thewlis is also extremely good at playing a character who is pretty much an avatar of God. It really is a shame that they cut his final scene from the script. After the Battle of Hattin, the Mullah is beheading the surviving Templars, and they bring Thewlis's Hospitaller to the sword. The Hospitaller kneels, the Mullah looks at him and says, "There is no god but God." And the Hospitaller smiles beatifically and says, "I know." In the script, the Mullah reacts as if struck by the thought that what he might be doing is blasphemy itself, but he still executes the Hospitaller, which explains why Balian later sees his severed head in the pile. |
