HELL YES IT WAS DESERVED.
This is coming from someone that thought the movie was crap, btw. I'd love to say that the practical effects Fury Road was the best of the nominees, but Ex Machina had some of the best use of CGI I've ever seen. It never distracted and it always did exactly what it was supposed to do; enhance the story.
And that story needed all of the enhancing it could get.

I'd love to say yes, but Mad Max...so no.

As a winner on its own, I think it's a very deserving film. I love the minimalism and the "less is more" aspect that makes it likely able to age very well in the coming years. But it also happened to win in what I consider the strongest year for the category in recent memory, and it shouldn't have won out over Fury Road, which deserved to sweep every tech. But on its own merits, yeah, it's a good winner.

Yes, it was the most impressive of the 5 nominees simply because it was an independent film, and it only had a $15 million budget.
