Bohemian Rhapsody initially a rough start (the really bad rating by pacinoyes), but barges back to about what I'd expect it would get on a general music forum. I never heard anything from Big Star. Abstaining. I know I can just listen to it on youtube, but I don't like doing that - because that cheapens the overall experience of the album, which is a classic. This song sometimes called the greatest pop song of all time was requested by Archie . I'll have to get back to this. Next up is a modern song (last 25 years). Not sure which yet. " I loved you, well, never mind" summed up Alex Chilton's - succinct genius in 6 words - a genius of self-negation that was his area of mastery pretty much alone - Lennon and Ray Davies often needed whole songs to convey precisely what Chilton did with such terse matter of factness.........and he did this, in this style - for a brief time - in many other songs too This method of writing was quite unique - not only wasn't he romanticizing the object of his affection as most do - or wallowing in despair - he was rather actively inserting and removing himself from the equation entirely..........in 1974 no one cared about this - or heard it much - because they were busy jerking off to Queen (um) or other such shit ...........10 years later though Alex Chllton was practically made into a Saint........ Giving this a 4 because I’m a spiteful bastard. ...jk, I’ll give it an 8. I like the song quite a bit, but I’d actually take “I'm in Love with a Girl” from the same album over it despite its brevity.
Can’t deny how great the guitars sound here though... the continuous down-strumming should make it feel like a dirge, but the bass and drums push the song along quite well. |
