I watched this on a pretty long plane ride, and man...it really does hold up brilliantly. This must've been my 5th or so viewing of the film, and it feels just as fresh, buoyant, and inspired now as it did when it was first released. I know Amy Heckerling has had minor successes elsewhere as a writer, but she really nailed the stake at the top of the mountain with this one. "Teen flicks" with classical literary roots are nothing new, but I really can't think of one that fashioned its own tone and style so confidently and seamlessly. The teens portrayed here feel like real teens, despite the sunny privileged bubble in which they exist. It's a shame that Alicia Silverstone's career went nowhere after this, because she demonstrated such stunning star-wattage as Cher and infused likeability into a character that sometimes feels elitist and stuck up on the page. The whole damn cast is pretty great, in fact.
Anyways, thoughts?

One of the best teen films of all time for sure, a true classic. I had a massive crush on Alicia Silverstone.

As a massive Austen fan, I'm delighted by how excellent Clueless is. Heckerling understood the story and humor in a way that pretty much no other writers seem capable of (Whit Stillman has proven himself with Love & Friendship, but no one else has made a good Austen adaptation outside of this movie). It's been quite a few years since I saw it, but I had quite a lot of fun with the story, and should revisit it.

Haven't seen it yet. Is it better than Mean Girls? By lightyears. I actually find the comparison a bit insulting.

Haven't seen it yet. Is it better than Mean Girls? Mean Girls >>>>> Clueless In terms of how overvalued it is, sure. Mean Girls is merely okay. Starts off mildly amusing but then fades into a generic message-y movie about how even mean girls have problems. Having said that, this wasn't meant to be a comparison thread. (Not that there's much of one ::sips tea:

Love it, love it, love it!
Also, it is soooooooo much better than the rather pedestrian Mean Girls, but then they aren't all that comparable anyway.

Pretty good teen flick.
On a side note, Paul Rudd has found the fountain of youth. He has hardly aged at all .

Paul Rudd is such a Baldwin. I don't really think I can add anything to what you said so beautifully in your OP, other than that I agree with every word. D'you think this would make a list of your 100 Favorite Films?

Agree with all you say. Dan Hedaya deserves special mention for the succession of zingers he reels off flawlessly. The way they transposed the Emma Woodhouse character so seamlessly into the late 20th century is hilarious. I'd love to have been the one reading Austen's novel, and seeing how well/easily it would translate.

This is one of those films that I have to pull out every now and then and watch again. You know me, I like to be miserable watching movies, but this film has so much damn CHARM that even I can't resist.

That being said, I still think THE CRAFT (1996) and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999) are the best teen flicks of the 90's.
