Voted Phantom Thread for em kicks on the other board. Still believe Wonderstruck's winning though. Cannot believe y'all trusted Cannes to be a predictor for an American award smh

I guess it can probably be again something we just don't expect yet. But for now I stay with Detroit.
I just don't think it will be The Papers. It's unlikely the Oscars will go for such a similar movie just two years after Spotlight again. This happens very rarely with them.

@jaytieagain how great chances do you think Last Flag Flying has? Linklater's new, seems like the opportunity to award him when they failed for Boyhood, sounded like a baity project to some extent, plot sounds approachable enough, name actors in the ensemble, could instigate nostalgia to some extent as a sequel to Last Detail, especially in Nicholson fans in the Academy etc etc

Mmm, I didn't think about the Spotlight comparison because the reporters in each film are tackling different material, but it could be a problem for The Papers since it could be seen as a reporters uncover a big story and has trouble reporting on it type of film like Spotlight. If that happens, I agree that it's unlikely that AMPAS would vote for something that could be seen as very similar just two years later. This could be even better for The Death of Stalin if it captures the zeitgeist of the American political year since it would avoid any comparisons to a recent Best Picture winner. Of course, he could have been just saying this due to his friendship to Armando Iannucci, but David Quantick a writer for Veep among many other things tweeted that he saw a screening of it, and it was the best film he's seen in ten years. I would also guess that it's coming out in October or November since Iannucci tweeted to someone that it would be out in Autumn. The only thing I'm hesitant about is IFC, but maybe the critics will get behind it. Here's the teaser poster too.

The Oscars will always be about politics, but It's not going to be about 'The Post.' It's just not. The film that plays the festival circuit (especially Toronto), and creates buzz, survives the likely takedown attempt and is nominated for a Best Ensemble SAG, will win Best Picture. “Gay” film or not.

Two reasons still make me hesitant, besides the distributor: that it might not be emotionally resonant enough, and that I wanted to be the first to call it lol.

I know how that is about wanting to be the first to call something. I guess that's probably why I'll stick with Denzel Washington for Best Actor when the time comes around for the poll again. Well partly that and partly because Best Actor is going to be so dull if Gary Oldman sweeps everything as predicted. I've come around to the fact that he probably will though after reading about someone praising his performance, and JayAgain review of the screenplay, but at least for now I still want to be contrarian. That's a good point about The Death of Stalin perhaps not being emotional resonant enough to win. That could be a big problem because I could see something like Darkest Hour, if it's good enough that is, hitting more of the beats that voters respond to.

Eww at our track record. One bp nod and I'm pretty sure that means that I voted for that one. I guess I'm sticking with The Papers even though now that everybody is voting for it, I think I need to find a new horse. Then again, it could be just that obvious this year.
