Say you’re in a social setting and talking to someone you’ve never met before and they ask you what you do for fun. Is your first answer about your interest in film? If so, how do you frame it? Do you just say “I like to watch a lot of movies,” or do you say something like “I’m a big film buff,” or do you frame it a different way? For whatever reason, the term “film buff” or “movie buff” has always been cringe to me, so I usually avoid it. But also just saying “I watch movies” sounds lame too for some reason, like it doesn’t sound as “worldly” as saying “I read a lot.” So I never really know how to talk about it with new people I meet without sounding like I have no life outside of sitting in front of the TV.

You're assuming we talk to new people in the first place

"I watch a movie every now and then", if you want to sound cool. "I love movies very much, they are my passion" or in that vain, if you are really keen on sharing that passion, at that moment.

I really only open to people I'm familiar with, and I frame it as "I watch way too many movies." It's not a passion, I hate/am ambivalent towards 2/3 of what I watch. I'm usually bringing it up in context of something else, too - I mentioned some movie or other in the middle of a conversation in which it came up, and then we just flowed into movies a bit. I know that most people won't be interested in the kinds of films I like either, so best to frame it negatively and let them come to me. Which doesn't happen, and that's fine.

"Name a shitty horror movie from the last 10 years and I've probably seen it..."

If I was in a social setting and someone asked me what I did for "fun" I doubt I'd raise something as losering as liking movies which haven't been fun - or cool - in a long time tbh...........maybe if I was a more active participant in creation of the Art like our resident genius tastybeverage11 - who possesses genuine filmmaking talent that I sadly do not ........and I secretly hate him for it just kidding, love that guy I am more likely to say I run a film series / film club (that's true btw) which is more active, social, and just sounds better and implies a certain faux-sophistication that I can't back up reallly........... and invite them to see me actually talk about some movies worth talking about......that would be good since it's also sponsored in conjunction with a local Wackadoodle Leftist University ..........which implies that maybe I'm an edgy old guy ........and rebellious in exactly the same way that everyone else is (um, so brave)............and I believe in dubious young people stuff like DEI or the 2024 version of the US Democrat Party .......

I will bring it up to people (not that I meet too many) if asked to talk about myself because outside of watching films and vintage TV shows, I'm probably the blandest, nondescript man on earth (and definitely an outcast). I have told others with a bit of a sheepish quality that I have seen nearly 8,000 movies, usually saying afterwards that its too many. I don't go too much into details because 90% of what I've seen is at least 20 years old.

Someone I worked with a few years ago asked me what my favourite movie was.
"There Will Be Blood," I said.
"Oh, you mean the Saw movie?"
"...What?"
It took me a moment to realize they thought I was talking about the Saw II poster with the tagline "Oh yes, there will be blood."

When someone asks me what my hobbies are, I usually say "Film is number one."

I usually will either downplay it or just emphasize that "I really love movies." If the conversation opens up more than that then I will give examples like I love all kinds, or just saying "I still like going to theaters" is enough lately. I also have a hat I often wear from the Chicago Film Festival and can mention I worked there. People have asked me who the logo is and the fact I can say it's a composite of three silent film stars and name them (Pola Negri, Mae Murray, Theda Bara) is pretty telling/damning. chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/ciff-1024x576.jpegSomeone recently said to me "Oh so you are a true believer" and that made me smile and feel "seen," I thought it was a very sweet way to put it. So I might steal that one.

I usually tell people I like classic film, which is accurate since most my favorites are pre 70's anyway, and it's also easier to explain and for people to "get" than weird arthouse movies. They'll just assume I'm sitting around watching classy black and white stuff or Hitchcock which is somewhat accurate.
