With 12 Years a Slave, McQueen does an awful lot to elevate a bad screenplay through style, but I also find that the most of the performances in here come off as one-note and overwrought to the point of caricature, especially Fassbender and Nyong'o. There's no modulation to be found here.
Gravity, meanwhile, is pitch-perfect and holds up on repeat viewings, and it never lacks its power. The return to Earth still packs a wallop.
I may not have liked Cuarón's second win, but I will forever champion his first. Alfonso.

12 Years a Slave has a bare bones screenplay with great action and direction. Gravity is just an FX showcase.

I feel like I'm a bigger fan of 12YAS than most people here because I think it's a great film and actually my favorite BP winner of the 2010s.
Gravity is only really impressive as a technical achievement and works best as a theme park ride, but its screenplay is so fucking pedestrian, it's like the Cuarón boys weren't even trying. It's as if Alfonso was so preoccupied with the spectacle of it that he only cared about the script as a means to an end and was just like "Eh, whatever, good enough" after finishing the first draft.
