The Revenant is not without its flaws (namely in how I feel the cinematography is unnecessarily showy for the story it's trying to tell; rather than evoking a Malickian thrall to nature, it should've been grim and brutal in its composition), but it also doesn't have Mark Ruffalo clogging up the pipes with one of the worst performances ever nominated.
So yeah, Alejandro for me.

I'll never understand why they didn't go with Keaton there... Afterglow love from Birdman plus a genuinely great performance. I'm still shocked that Ruffalo managed the awards traction over him... |

They were trying a leading run for Keaton at the start there, as he had won NYFCC, but when it became abundantly clear it was DiCaprio's year, they tapered off that campaign quickly, which is a shame indeed. |

Not a huge Revenant fan either but Spotlight is the most cold passionless Oscar bait which is pretty stunning considering the subject matter, you'd think they'd stumble into something even if by accident.

1. I still believe that The Revenant would have won Picture if it wasn't for Inarritu winning Picture literally the year before with Birdman. So they settled for a Directing win, because they didn't want to give it to Mad Max, which is considered as an "action movie".
2. They should have campaigned Micheal Keaton in Supporting since it's an ensemble at the end of the day.
3. To this day, i'm still not able to understand the excessive love this film industry, especially his acting peers, has for Mark "Average Joe" Ruffalo.

They're both fine, but they're the two weakest nominees in a fantastic group. (Yes, I like The Big Short, shut up.) One is a bit too artsy and pretentious but has a fire and grit to it regardless, and the other is workmanlike and gets the job down without any ambition to be better than forgettable.
I'll take The Revenant. It has a cooler title.

Pretty easily The Revenant for me. More unique, more involving, even if it's more flawed.
Spotlight is fine, but there is little that makes it cinematically compelling. It would be just as if not more interesting to simply read about how the news team uncovered the story. Also, as far as the ensemble goes, I think the best performances come from the victims (Michael Cyril Creighton especially) and Rachel McAdams who probably does as good a job of acting listening with empathy as I've seen in a while.

One of the great gutless dogshit Oscar decisions of all time. Give Fury Road the most awards, give The Revenant those two prominent ones, but let's give best pic to All the President's Meh. I'm trying to decide my favourite scene - Rachel McAdams and her nanna or Mark Ruffalo's iconic rant at the end. IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANY OF US! Wasn't that line from Rocky IV? Only slightly less ham-fisted than The Cobbler.

Neither makes my top ten of that year, but I'll go with Spotlight. TV-ish, but still solid, and I'm kind of a sucker for these kinds of procedurals anyway. The Revenant I suppose is more unique and directorially ambitious, but as I said in the "Rate the Oscar-Winning Directing" poll, it's showboaty in a way that pulls me out of it more than it pulls me in. I'll also hop on the bandwagon of those calling it pretentious (a word I normally hate using, but I think it fits here).
