Baltimore's very own Oscar winner does a great job with managing the tone and cultivating the acting rapport of Cruise and Hoffman, which is the backbone of the film itself. On a technical level it's not really doing anything all that impressive and as far as the editing goes there's a shagginess to the film that undercuts it a bit (particularly in the second act). A very fine middlebrow picture with its strength in two really good performances that come together to display legitimate connection, and a movie I thought about a ton when I was going down escalators in Vegas a few months back.
