In 2019, we had 31 films crossing the 100 million dollar mark at the U.S-Canadian box-office. 11 of those films crossed the 200 million dollar mark. 2021 had 14 crossing the 100 million dollar mark and 3 crossing 200 million. 2022 had 22 crossing 100 million and 8 crossing the 200 million. Last year, we had 25 making over 100 million at the box-office, and 8 over the 200 million.
I did not count 2020 in my data for obvious reasons. But COVID, inflation, and the world of streaming has indeed contributed to the decline of people going to the movies. This year we saw The Fall Guy and Furiosa getting strong critical and audience praise, but low audience turnout in its opening weekend. The Fall Guy was available for video-on demand three weeks after its opening weekend.
What do you guys think of the future of the theater industry?

The Fall Guy is still going strong with low drops on subsequent weekends despite the VOD release.
This is a sign of hope that people crave to see popcorn movies like these ones on the big screen.

Are you suggesting that the theater industry will rebound or we should have more patience with films? Opening weekend results shouldn't be the benchmark for a film's success or failure?

Opening weekends shouldn't absolutely be the metrics of success, the legs of a movie is all that matters.
Normal people, who are the ones who truly make this film industry keep going are in no rush to catch up with a movie, they wait on second or third weekend to see it.

We definitely should change the bar and theaters shouldn't be too quick to yank a movie. |

Marketing only to the opening weekend is not a way to protect their investment since only major event films (which are getting harder to predict) will generate significant enough results. If a film is immediately labeled a bomb upon release, that only deters audiences and further frightens the fear-avoidant studios. It's an unhealthy way of dealing with the economics of movies right now. |

And then to couch these films in the context of "worst Memorial Day weekend ever" unnecessarily tarnishes movies that could have seen life with positive WOM, but now the narrative has shifted to "these movies are flops." |

Do you think VOD dates should be pushed toward 2 months after release? That to me can help a film gain a following. I personally think VOD should be four months at minimum for major studio wide releases. You have to create an atmosphere that the cinematic experience is unmissable, and having such a huge turnaround in streaming or home-video release is killing that. In the meantime, look at Godzilla Minus One. It got a theatrical release, but it took forever for them to release it on an accessible home-video platform. During that time, people were clamouring for it, demanding to see it. They could've released it again in theaters after the Oscars and I guarantee you it would've done numbers. You have to create a demand for the product, and part of that demand is the event status of it. |

Sure, there may be fewer billion dollar movies the last couple of years but that also feels like a nature ebb and flow. Box office was very healthy last year, no? Not saying that streaming has zero impact, but the state of theatrical movie goers was already changing and streaming just accelerated it a bit. But the movie theater industry isn’t dying or going away, nor is it even close to that. |

I do think early streaming is having on effect box office performance of a movie but then again something like Furiosa comes and flops which doesn't have anything to do with streaming. I think the average folk are clear on what movies they want to spend their money and what movies they want to wait and stream and then there are a few movies that they are not all interested and that's Furiosa. The Fall Guy will do better on streaming.

It won't, but it definitely doesn't help either. Streaming has created a world in which movies have to be "events" for people to enjoy, especially since money is a problem. It can't merely be, "Oh, let's go see a rom-com or a traditional comedy." It has to be more in your face, and this has affected theaters adversely. If there aren't multiple movies doing well all at once, then that's not great. The other issue is that entertainment is down in general—not just movies, but video games are not doing great either. |

Barbieheimer is an example of an "event". Two quality films with flash being released on the same day. Cinema has rebounded to a certain degree from COVID fears, but I do not believe we will ever go back to pre-COVID era. There's going to be a higher demand for VOD. The Matt Damon video above hits on the concept that the market has changed. |
