Forrest Gump is a hard, hard movie to make work. Hanks gets a lot of the credit for his performance (and deservedly so), but this movie lives and dies by the directorial choices of Zemeckis, and he rises to the task superbly.

I will say I rate Zemeckis a little lower than I do Hanks because I feel that Zemeckis kind of overdoes it a bit with the gimmicks. The John Lennon scene in particular I find to be annoying. Had he resisted those indulgent tendencies a bit more and shown some restraint, the direction would shoot up more in my estimation.

To me the most impressive thing is his control of tone, especially the fact that he manages to make it funny without being condescending. And as a fan of sentimentality done right, I commend him for, well, doing it right. And then there are the technical experiments too which are quite impressive. I hope Here brings this Robert Zemeckis, who was once interested in innovations, back.
