I would've given him higher because I truly think he did such a good job assembling such a big team and getting them all together in unison is as good a job as he could do.   That is the textbook definition of directing.   His directing needs to be separate from the script. Titanic's script is not good. His T-2 script is far better, but we're rating directing not script writing.

Only reason why I take off 1 point is because MAR is loaded with Leo/Winslet/Titanic fanboys and their childhood nostalgia for this movie is one of the chief reasons why this springboarded. Annoying because there aren't many Titanic fans on the other erudite forum I'm visiting.

I take off another point because it feels like a Scorsese situation. Didn't win for Raging Bull and Goodfellas but wins for The Departed. Cameron didn't win for T-2, but wins for Titanic feels like the same principle.

For sheer spectacle alone it's still among the very best.

10/10.

An astonishing achievement. Cameron doing the old Hollywood epics one better with an incredible sense of scale, very lively performances across the ensemble, and perfect tonal balance for the heightened sense of emotion that ended up clearly being universal.
