Still when he's on point here, which is the majority, it is greatness.

6.5 - the Omaha landing is some of Spielberg's best work but the rest of the movie is buried under so many layers of schmaltz that it's hard to get invested, especially because it's a fictional story. Everything in the second half especially feels artificial and emotionally choreographed.

8. The virtuoso Omaha Beach sequence is as good as filmmaking gets, and it really does a lot of the heavy lifting for the rest of the movie up till Ramelle's battle scene. Spielberg makes a few small directorial choices I really don't agree with that I think do hurt the movie overall, but I will give it its flowers for what it does very well.

Omaha beach sequence is some unbelievably great, all-time level filmmaking. The rest is still strong (pretty much impossible for Spielberg to do a bad job directorially) if not quite as much and I think the culmination of the framing device doesn't stick the landing, but the cast is aces, the visual language is top notch, and it always plays better than I remember it.

I rate the film a bit lower than an 8 overall, but that’s mostly due to the screenplay, especially in the final act. On a directorial level, a lot of it is great, but unfortunately I think Spielberg succumbs to the screenplay’s obviousness by the end.
