Looks like Angel Reese may be becoming arguably the most marketable player in the WNBA. She just signed a sponsorship deal with confectionery giant Reese's Pieces, who are creating an apparel/clothing line around her.
And toy company Mattel are teaming with Chicago Sky to host the Barbie Night Game against Indiana Fever on August 30th. Reese's nickname is Barbie, so Mattel are obviously jumping on that association, as are Reese's Pieces.

Reese is by far the steal of the 2024 draft and has exceeded expectations so much that you have the Minnesota Lynx beat writer, Patrick Reusse, writing op-ed pieces and posting on X criticizing the organization (specifically Cheryl Reeve who just finished a stint coaching Team USA to another gold medal) for not drafting Reese. For a bit of background, the Lynx had the 7th pick in the draft and made a deal to trade down with Chicago so Chicago could get the 7th pick and Minnesota could get the 8th pick. Chicago did that deal to ensure they would get Reese who they coveted and the Lynx ended up getting Alissa Pili. Unfortunately for Pili, she's had to be a bench warmer this year and hasn't gotten much playing time, while Reese is putting up a historical season and having the Sky in playoff contention.

Pretty sure Reese made her own career by being a champion in College, something CC couldn't quite manage.
Agreed on Kate Martin though. Being teammates and besties at Iowa with CC really did wonders for her.

If Reese taunts Clark and loses the final, nobody gives a fuck about her. She'd be forgotten by the following Monday. It's the winning part that ultimately mattered. Reese is famous because she's a champion and an extremely marketable one at that . A winner. Every champion needs a worthy opponent to stand out. It's like saying Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal "made" Novak Djokovic, because he had to beat them a lot to win his titles. Well you could argue that, but you'd be fucking stupid. Clark became exponentially more famous and supported than she was previously because of being taunted by Reese. If anything, Clark benefited more from the actual taunting than Reese, since she lost the championship. But the sight of Clark (the Great White Hope of Women's College Basketball) being taunted by the black girl who beat her in Reese, really galvanised this MAGA type fanbase that Clark has carried into the WNBA. I don't think Clark is still Clark without Reese. At least not the Clark with the insane fanbase she has now. That fanbase needed to be galvanised by a "villain" to Clark's "hero", and they found one in Reese. Clark was the same player the previous two years before that championship final, but didn't have that crazy fanbase. It's the "rivalry" with Reese and all the media coverage and thinkpieces about race in sport and America ( also the controversy that Jill Biden tried to invite Clark and the losing team to the White House with the winners, that Reese pushed back against) that followed that truly exploded Clark's following into what it is now. This caption on the "taunt" actually covers it correctly. It's the moment that changed women's basketball forever, because that's when they both became the primary figures in the Women's game. Clark was popular, but Reese doing that to her (plus beating her and becoming a champion in the process) took her popularity to a completely different level. Without an antagonist like Reese, Clark is just a record breaking college basketball player with no titles. They helped each other. That's what rivalrys do. |

As Clark aspires to be Ionescu - arguably already is - Reese should aspire to be Alyssa Thomas...........a post player who passes and is a GREAT defender every possesson.......Reese being more lke Thomas woul make her a better all around player........Thomas is maybe the best all around player and 4th in the MVP race behind Wilson, Clark and Ionescu.......  |
