Last year, Barbie was the champ, with The Super Mario Bros Movie also a 1billion dollar + grosser.
We are getting into Summer season, so I think we'll start to find out what the 2024 champ will be from this point onwards. So far the year's highest grossing movie is Dune 2, with a worldwide gross of 708 million dollars to date. Impressive, but I'm not sure it'll be enough to win the year. But I'll keep it on the poll.
I put as many as the most realistic options on the poll. Now it's up to you to decide!

Let's make Twisters the must-see event of the millennium.

Before last year, I probably would have plumped for Deadpool & Wolverine. But I do feel superhero movie fatigue is a real thing, and while I expect it to be a hit, I don't think it'll be a big enough hit to win the year outright.
Joker: Folie a Deux maybe? The first one grossed a billion dollars plus worldwide. But there's a risk that fans of the first one, won't neccesarily appreciate the leaning into the musical genre for the second film.

I think it'll be Mufasa. The Lion King is still a massive brand name, it has cross-generational appeal, and while I don't think this prequel will match the $1.6b that the CGI remake did, even if it falls short at $1.2b I don't see any other film on here matching that. And if people actually like it, it could very well get back up to $1.6b+.

If the sense of scale and spectacle is as huge as well the reports out of CinemaCon made it out to be, it could do special numbers. And if that budget is in the 300 million range as reported, the numbers need to be exceptional.

It's a wildcard, though I think the chances for an R-rated swords & sandals epic in 2024 are pretty tough. Plus, I'm a touch skeptical of the $300m budget reports. Wouldn't be surprised if that number was floated to get tax rebates from the local government. Either way, though, it'll receive a strong marketing push but then it would need to be Scott's most liked movie since at least The Martian and be at least comparable to the spectacle of Dune: Part Two for it to get close to the $1b mark which is pretty much necessary these days for a film to be the highest grossing of its year.

I'm going with Mufasa: The Lion King. As Mike said, The Lion King brand name is as strong as ever and the film will definitely bring out the family/kids quadrant which always helps a bottom line. My wildcard is Gladiator 2, because it sounds like the scale of this film is going to be huge and you have generations (Gen X, Millennials) of moviegoers who have an attachment to the first who might be curious how this one will be. They need to knock it out of the park with the trailers/marketing though. And I hope it does well, because Ridley Scott spared no fucking expense on this one, and good lawd $310 million dollars is a lot of money.

Prrrrrrobably Mufasa, even if it won't match the 2019 one's result. The LK brand is just too strong.
Otherwise, I think Deadpool and Joker are hitting a billion or something close to it. But nothing else.

I don't neccesarily think it'll be the highest grossing movie of the year, but I wouldn't sleep on Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse hitting the billion dollar mark, or close to it. The love and audience growth for this series is one of the most organic things I've ever seen. The first movie ( Into The Spider-Verse) grossed around 385 million dollars worldwide. The 2nd movie ( Across The Spider-Verse) grossed almost 700 million dollars worldwide. With that kind of audience and growth, a billion feels possible for the last installment of the trilogy:

The thing with Mufasa is that didn't everyone (kids and adults alike) end up hating the Lion King remake? I know everyone showed up to check it out because the original is so iconic, but who wants to see more of it?
Even though its audience doesn't include younger kids, the anticipation for Joker: Folie A Deux feels much bigger for many people, both fans o the original and fans of Gaga.

People on the internet did, but audiences as a whole clearly didn't, as you don't make way over a billion if most of the audience hated the film.

I feel I underestimated Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, as it just posted a global high opening weekend for the franchise at 131 million dollars worldwide ( a franchise high opening). I still don't see it winning the year at all, but I didn't even have it on the poll as all the films in the modern Apes franchise seem to have a ceiling in terms of how much they can make. And that ceiling isn't high enough to win a year. Wonder if that could be changing?

Inside Out 2 got zero votes, yet is now currently the highest grossing movie of 2024, with a 720 million dollar worldwide gross after only two weekends on release, dethroning Dune: Part Two as the year's highest grossing movie to date. This will easily pass the billion dollar mark and may well be this year's box office champ.
The first film made a lot of money in 2015, but I don't think many people saw this kind of performance coming.

IDK but think of how much fun it would be if it was Megalopolis. Maybe Zoomers can go to see it high en masse.
