Do you keep track on Letterboxd, IMDb, or a spreadsheet of all the films you have seen? Usually one of the easiest ways to sort is by arranging things by year, and I wondered just exactly how many films we have seen from all the years in films.
I'll start with my own numbers saved on a spreadsheet. As you can see, I'm pretty hopeless when it comes with dealing with recent years.

according to my Letterboxd stats my highest-viewed years are 2019 (155 films), 2022 (144 films), and 2023 (134 films), but those numbers aren't reliable because LB uses first release date including festivals. My actual highest year is 2023 where I watched 155. I'm barely edging into the 40s for my 50s lineups and I've been seeing some pretty obscure stuff, I don't know how you've gotten 100+ in some of those years  |

I'm barely edging into the 40s for my 50s lineups and I've been seeing some pretty obscure stuff, I don't know how you've gotten 100+ in some of those years Let's just say that the intensive numbers of mine for years in the 30s, 40s, and 50s come from years of intensive viewing of Turner Classic Movies, buying or borrowing DVDs and VHS tapes, and searching on the internet all over. My specialty in those years were mostly the A-list studio projects, but some of them were B-films. And yes, many of them would hardly have any name recognition value, but its fun to look for them and to watch if it includes a favorite star (of which I have quite a few). One great resource for finding out information about classic films are the coffee table books done in the 70s and 80s that were each devoted to a single studio, hense "The Warner Bros. Story", "The Films of 20th Century Fox" , "The MGM Story", "The Paramount Story", "The Columbia Story", "The United Artists Story", "The Universal Story", "The RKO Story". They are now years hopelessly out of date (Warner was last updated in 1978, and even the most recent one, Paramount, was last updated at the end of 2001), but if you see one available used online or maybe (and I don't know if it is, or if they are) even if one turns up for borrowing on Internet Archive, it is definitely worth a look because they provide you with photos and brief desciptions of every major film in the studios history up to the point of publication. I doubt I would have seen so many classics if it hadn't been for so many of them sounding so intriguing in the books. It's strange though....I'm still not quite 30 (that will be early next year), but 87% of what I've seen is at least 25 years old, my favorite movie stars are now either older or dead, and I haven't seen too many new releases. I guess I was born with an old soul. |

And also, I have to say, I still have to fully update my Letterboxd log. I watched a lot of films last year to help cope with family chaos, but it is so had to rate things on Letterboxd on anythink other than a desktop computer, and I was largely away from those for six months.... So I still have ground to cover there to capture all the titles I've seen (which is in full on my tablet's spreadsheet).

It's strange though....I'm still not quite 30 (that will be early next year), but 87% of what I've seen is at least 25 years old, my favorite movie stars are now either older or dead, and I haven't seen too many new releases. I guess I was born with an old soul. People dig different things.  I'm into a lot of foreign - particularly Asian - movies if I can find them. I can't stand most of the well-known music from any time period, but I'll jump on some 1950s vocal jazz or traditional folk or Japanese fusion record. I do believe modern Hollywood is absolutely abysmal and we won't see anything like the 1970s classics out of it for a long time, but I don't think that's taste, it's just... sense. |

L'Inferno (1911) I think is the oldest feature I've seen, which I'm defining as over an hour for simplicity. Most years in the 10s I've seen a single feature and a handful of shorts. Of all the pre-1911 shorts I've logged, 1896 has the most with 14.
1921 is the earliest year where I've seen more than one feature, The Kid and The Phantom Carriage. Throughout the 20s I've seen at least 5 shorts or features combined per year. 1927 has the most features with 8.
1933 is the earliest year where I've seen more than 10 features. 1939 predictably has the most, I've seen 18. Pretty consistently seen 5-10 features per year for the 30s.
1940s average 10-15 features a year. 1948 has 18, tied with 1939. 1943 is my lowest count of the 40s with 5 features plus some classic shorts like Meshes and Red Hot Riding Hood.
1953 is the earliest year with at least 20 features, I've seen 23 plus 9 shorts. Equalled or bettered by 1955 (25) and 1957 (23). No year in the 50s under 10.
No big milestones in the 60s, kind of surprisingly. Nothing beats 1955's count of 25, but I have seen more overall in the decade averaging 15-20 a year. Sleeping on 1969 where I've seen 14.
Again somewhat surprisingly to me, the 70s are also much the same, around 15-20 per year. 1979 is the earliest year to edge out 1955 with 26. Still waiting for a year with 30....
1980s continues the trend of increasing the average. At least 20 per year, usually over 25. 1987 is my earliest year hitting 30+ and 1989 takes the cake with 36, counting Dekalog as one. Shout-out to 1986 which has 29, honorable mention to The Singing Detective.
1994 is the big year where I've hit 40 movies...I can tell this decade is about to get a major boost from the crap of my childhood and it's probably fair to say I've still only seen 20-30 movies from that year that are of similar quality to previous decades. Alas the numbers don't lie. Even strictly disqualifying direct-to-video releases and Disney Channel Original Movies for my own dignity, that doesn't stop 1997 and 1999 from surpassing 50 each.
2001 is the year where I break 60, then 2004 breaks 70. All through the 2000s I average 60-70 theatrically released movies.
I pumped my rookie numbers up to a peak in 2011 with 76, and then I started slowing down and/or spending more time on previous decades (not to mention other hobbies and eventually trying harder to live a life). I dipped below 60 new releases after 2013, below 50 after 2016, and 2019 is the lowest of the decade at 37. Funnily enough, 2019 sticks out to me as one of my favorite movie years in recent memory. Maybe there's something to being discerning. I guess it also makes sense that I've had more time to catch up on 2011 but eh, looking at the log dates, I was pretty much there within a year or two.
Regardless of whether you count Small Axe as one or five films, 2020 was still an inevitable low in my lifetime with around 20. But then I was SO BACK as Film Twitter would say. It gets harder for me to define what "counts" but it's around 45 in 2021, 40 in 2022, 35 in 2023....5 so far in 2024, checked out Challengers, Drive-Away Dolls, Lisa Frankenstein, Dune, Ghostbusters.
I feel like ~40 new releases is a perfectly enjoyable average for me these days. I look at 2011 and I'm just like, fuck, there's no need. My FOMO definitely whittled down by the end of that decade, once I'd felt the effect of diminishing returns in trying to catch up on everything I'd been told to see, either currently or in the past. Now I can say I only watch the things I'm interested in, or whatever will do for a night out/in with others.
Footnote, looks like 1996 is my current "pivot point" where I've seen as many movies before that year as I've seen after.
