I remember that upon its release it triggered either love/hate responses - it was either a stirring exploration of grief or a film full of style, but no substance. Nearly 15 years since its Venice premiere, where Colin Firth won the Volpi Cup for his (career-best IMO) performance, what are your thoughts on this film and its performances? Please share!   |

I really like it. It's so gorgeous to look at and this is probably Colin Firth's best performance.

I only got around to it within the last month or two, while plugging up some Oscar viewing related holes (so, by now, I've seen all of the Oscar nominated performances from 1931 to 2000. (It would be longer, but I'm scared to see I am Sam, I forgot all about Transamerica, and I do not have access to Blood Diamond)
Anyway, it is a tour de force for Colin Firth, the supporting actors are strong,the script is sensitive and well-written, but I was just struck by how horny this film was. I mean nearly every man and woman in it looks like a model (Tom Ford living up to the industry which made him famous) and the urgency around physical attraction seems a bit odd for a story of a man with suicidal depression.
Still, it is a very good film, one of the better offerings of a humdrum year.

Better than Nocturnal Animals, but most trash you find on the street is better than that film. Still overly glossy and to me, ill-fitting to finding any real humanity in the story. The whole thing feels too easy, too pristine, too sanitized to depict suicidal depression right down to the ending: Where a suicidal man conveniently dies naturally making it so the filmmaker doesn't have to commit to a choice |

I remember loving Firth's performance, Korzeniowski's score, and Grau's shots, and hating just about everything else.
