I've watched two "pirate" films in the last few days... Vincente Minnelli's The Pirate with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly (this was Heath Ledger's favorite movie  ) and Polanski's absolutely dire Pirates (  if he has a film worse than this... I haven't seen it). I'm also currently obsessing over the Caribbean as a travel destination, so... what are some of your favorites?   |

LOVE the murky, mildewy aesthetic of the PoTC movies (especially Dead Man's Chest). They're incredibly silly but the behind the scenes craftsmanship is unparalleled, from the sets to Penny Rose's swashbuckling outfits, to the insane makeup/prosthetic effects, and the VFX hold up surprisingly well too for their time. And Captain Jack is fun but these days I find myself staying for Keira Knightley who's clearly having a blast. as for my favorite, it's gotta be Jacques Tourneur's Anne of the Indies (1951) starring Jean Peters as a badass pirate captain. It's a remarkably forward-thinking portrayal for its time and Peters holds her own with fire and surprising ruthlessness. Gorgeous costumes & cinematography too. I wonder how many 1950s lesbians had their gay awakening with this one.   |

Cutthroat Island
For a movie that's known as one of the biggest flops of all-time, it's extremely fun and you can definitely see its influence on Pirates of the Caribbean...which it beat to the punch by 8 years. It's always strange to me which movies end up being hits and which ones flop. This feels like something that was ahead of its time, like Marty McFly said "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
