Never nominated until 2011 - but since then 3 times - with a win - and like I always say it doesn't matter how many you get - it's how many you MISS........a memorable 1 scene in Oppy, a BP winner.........and the front runner to win a BA Emmy for a series - Slow Horses - which is more or less unheard of for an actor of his staure (i.e. to win for a series not a TV movie or lmited series) ........if he wins that Emmy I think it's possible to call Slow Horses one of the roles of his career - if it's not already......... Kind of an amazing - and somewhat improbable turn of events in his career arc........how many Oscar nods should this guy have ffs?

Yet he still feels underrated on this board.
This board only talks about Phoenix, DiCaprio, and DDL.
I think hes better than both Phoenix and DiCaprio. Oldman is a generational talent, the other 2 are just good enhancers who grabbed some great roles. River would be closer to the generational talent to me if he didnt die.
The difference is Oldman can be great even in movies that arent that makes him stand out.

Slow Horses is the role of his career, and I've been saying that for the last couple years.
Oldman works best when he dials it down, and yet Jackson Lamb feels like the perfect fusion of his minimalist skills and his theatrical tendencies. Honestly, if Oldman stopped doing anything else except playing this role for the next twenty years, I'd make that trade in a heartbeat.

I'm not always on board with that kind of summation - like you know Pacino, Nicholson, Depardieu, Finney - all faves of mines - get that too and sometimes with actors of their caliber I say - often, more IS more But I think for Oldman I can certainly see where someone thought he was overrated earlier (not to me) - and reversed course just on Slow Horses and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.........his tool kit is quite versatile anyway..........

He can play Sid Vicious or George Smiley. He's the opposite of a character actor (not despising character actors though).

There's a line I use when actors have deep gallery of roles and in his case it goes like this: there are other actors who could plays George Smiley, Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald, Dracula, Churchill, Joe Orton, Beethoven, Jackie Flannery, Bex.........but only Gary Oldman could have played them ALL

He's an all-time great and he's just about every other famous actor's favorite actor. He's gotten his Oscar and hopefully he can get his Emmy, and while he doesn't need anything else at this point in his career, I'd love to see him return to the stage and master that too. I would buy tickets to see Oldman on Broadway in a second.

I hope he gets another nomination for the new Sorrentino film.

This board undervalued his Mank tbh, but yes his Jackson Lamb is among his best work and it's exciting to see him still at the top of his game (arguably his peak) decades in.
