I agree. I like them both but this has practically zero chance of having commercial success.

To me this is bad casting simply because Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner were top of the range A-list movie stars when they starred in the original. And they had all the advantages and audience expectations that came with that. You either need to match or surpass that level of casting, or just leave it alone.
It was the same deal with Mr & Mrs Smith. You needed A-list movie stars the calibre of Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie to really sell that movie.
Cumberbatch is not a movie star. Doctor Strange is a movie star, but he isn't. He's just a popular and acclaimed actor that acts in movies. Same for Colman. They haven't got the juice to match the original casting.
If we're sticking to a middle aged couple, Bradley Cooper ( I know he's disliked around here, but he's kinda perfect for this) and Charlize Theron would be excellent casting for an update.

I'm watching Rifkin's Festival now, and I suppose I'm meant to believe that Gina Gershon is married to Wallace Shawn, so... it's definitely time for an unattractive woman to be in a mismatch relationship. pacinoyes ibbi

Oh for fuck's sake. Olivia Colman is not a fucking bridge troll. She looks perfectly lovely and is an attractive woman.

stephen - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Keep living - like what you like! I just find it so fascinating that someone who is so enraptured by actresses still feels the need to marginalize them because of their looks. I'm sure Glenn Close, who had to fight tooth and nail throughout her whole career against comments like this to attain roles like Fatal Attraction (co-starring Michael Douglas), would appreciate these sentiments. Very disappointing.

I'm simply being honest... I'm not naive.

Well, I certainly hope you'll come to Close's defense this vociferously the next time her looks are attacked... which happens rather frequently on this forum. Edit: And I'm not surprised this censure is reserved only for me.

Her looks are a.) out of her control, b.) not worth criticizing for because she also looks perfectly fine, and c.) have nothing to do with her talent as an actress, so sure, I'll be more than happy to. But the fact that you of all people feel it's okay to take a superficial dig at Olivia Colman (whom you have criticized unnecessarily in the past, especially in the wake of her winning the Oscar) while being a strong proponent of actresses who have had to deal with this sort of casually withering dismissal is disappointing.

Again, it's not lost on me that this intense censure is reserved only for me when virtually every user has poked fun at an actor's looks at some point or another, and Olivia Colman is the only person who benefits from your defense - because she is one of your favorites.

"Intense censure"? I commented that Olivia Colman is lovely (a positive reinforcement on a thread like this, considering everyone else is dismissive of this project's success because, what, she's not Kathleen Turner?), because other posters said it was "bad casting" and that "no one would believe they were married to each other." You were the one who commented with a dismissive GIF and then took the time to edit your comment to add that she is unattractive, likening her to Wallace Shawn, laughing about it, and tagging two other posters. So yeah, I called you out. And you've not invalidated anything I've said.

And I understand that things can be misconstrued without vocal context, but my laughter was in response to Gina Gershon being married to Wallace Shawn... Which I suppose I deserve censure for that too, right? Are you really this humorless? But again, the worst thing I said about her is that she is "unattractive". Which is simply my opinion. Feminists are allowed to think that certain women are unattractive the last time I checked? I didn't bring up Glenn Close, but since you did, she has been called "Baba Yaga", "hideous", and "someone you would never want to fuck" on this forum, and that's just off the top of my head.

I'm game! Wasn't crazy about the OG but Douglas & Turner will be a hard pairing to improve on, but this seems like pretty new territory for Cumberbatch & Colman who are both immensely talented so I'm excited to see what they do with it. btw, Colman is a certified classy af MILF

I care more about the rapport between the actors than anything else. Interesting enough pairing. As for how attractive Colman is, all I'll say is

You know, one of the things that's so great about the original film - and I'm hardly a nig Michael Douglas fan - is how mean-spirited the film is.....and I mean that as a compliment.........Douglas in particular is written great in that he is sorta drive mad by her - which is a very out of fashion type of character ......... Douglas is always better in dramedy - as a straight drmatic actor, he's a bore to me........but War of the Roses isn't just dark...it's pitch black.....heckuva endng too Not sure I see the point in a remake but we'll see........it's funy how in the 80s you'd get this sort of dark material at a regualr rate - Tin Men.......Heathers........etc

First of all, this is a movie. I deal with LA prices so...
Second, nobody said anything about her being unattractive. Colman just gives off matronly vibe in comparison to Benedict.
