@ those who voted supporting: according to this lovely site her screen time is almost 5 mins longere than Binoche... does that change your answer? Could a lead possibly have a shorter screentime than a supporting performer?

@ those who voted supporting: according to this lovely site her screen time is almost 5 mins longere than Binoche... does that change your answer? Could a lead possibly have a shorter screentime than a supporting performer? First question, it isn't Binoche v. Thomas, they can both be supporting or lead, but rather both v. Fiennes, who has the dominate screen-time by 20% over both. Do you ever think it is either their stories and not Fiennes? I'd say you might argue Binoche more than Thomas, but both their stories service his, the main/lead story first and foremost.
And on your question: "Could a lead possibly have a shorter screentime than a supporting performer?"
It is extremely rare, but the answer actually is yes via Stalag 17. William Holden is the main character of that film, he's the focal point, and he's what drives all the action, BUT he has considerably less screentime than supporting nominee Robert Strauss, however if you watch the film few would think Strauss was ever the lead of the film, as his comedic shenanigans are never what drives the story.
