I'll go first. The things i dislike about Nolan (giving Spielberg a rest and going with my #2)
1. The naming of characters especially in his original films. Cobb, Cooper, Murph, Neil, Farrier etc., Makes them feel like pieces of a puzzle than living and breathing characters. Do better Nolan.
2. His obsession with IMAX. The format is great but the shifting aspect ratios can be irritating and the fact that there aren't many 70mm IMAX venues in the world makes this obsession of his even more baffling. Inception looked as spectacular as his IMAX films. Shoot large format and be done with it.
Now what don't you like about your favorite director?

He literally called the main character in his film-before-last Protagonist . He don't care. The only reason Oppenheimer had names that seemed like they had thought put into them was because it's based on real life history and he had no choice. He's really unbotherd in his original scripts.

I love you Spike, but:
1) Please update some of the slang terminology in your films. Man is stuck in the early 1990s with some of his dialogue, please join us in 2024. 2) Please stop putting "Da" in your joint titles. "Da Sweet Blood of Jesus", "Da 5 Bloods", "Da Understudy"..STOP IT!! 3) Everyone knows the dolly shot is your film signature and they're on the lookout for it these days. Doesn't necessarily have to be in every film you make.

Well that rape of a child is a drawback ....although if I'm being honest not really to me because I just judge his work......7 masterpieces and what not........and hey if I looked at my favorite artists personal lives I'd miss out on a lot of great stuff (Jerzy Kosinski, The Rolling Stones, Woody Allen, Depardieu, too many others to even mention tbh)

Not sure I understand the issue. Cobb, Cooper, and Farrier are the surnames of the characters, and they seem pretty plausible to me as surnames. *shrugs* The only one of those that clearly sounds to me like a made-up name is Murphy Cooper, and of course that one is due to the Murphy’s Law connection, so even the movie is aware of how awkward her name is lol. He literally called the main character in his film-before-last Protagonist . He don't care. In some interviews during Tenet’s release, he talked about how he wanted JDW’s character to be like a Clint Eastwood “Man with No Name” type of figure, so I think it’s not so much that he didn’t care about putting thought into a name, but rather his attempt to create an “iconic” hero in that same vein.

The usual stuff tbh. Heavy exposition and questionable sound mixing.

1. While I think she's a fine writer, I think she's a faaaaaar better director... I wish she would direct someone else's screenplay just once! 2. Why is she asking Philippe Le Sourd to make her films sooooo dark and smoky? No other notes, Goddess. Keep being you.

for all of rivette's incredible talents, he wasn't super duper keen on making those sort of desktop background type shots that a lot the old masters excelled at. a lot of his films are beautiful of course but they rarely go beyond nice compositions. that said i wouldn't say any of his films look "bad" and he has a huge collection of incredible films and virtually never made anything minor and made the best film ever etc etc

I don't really have a favorite director, largely for the reasons I would cite in criticizing any of my favorite directors. Nobody got large enough that they seemed to eat up or utterly dominate the greatness achieved by other great directors. If Francis Ford Coppola had remained vital post-The Rainmaker, I think he could have been my favorite director.

His ostensible role as "King of Hollywood" for decades meant that studios and other filmmakers would try to move in his direction in a lazy attempt to capture his box office appeal, resulting in the increased emphasis on blockbuster films. It also means his own films up through a certain period carry with them the burden of having to be the definitive Hollywood version of their subject - i.e. instead of Schindler's List just being a Holocaust movie, it became the Holocaust film.
As for his filmmaking itself, I think sometimes his codas go on a touch long (Lincoln, Bridge of Spies most notably) but when he does endings well they're all-timers so it's still a conditional criticism. He also sometimes lend his talents to lesser material, doing his damnedest to polish a script that doesn't deserve him (The Lost World, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, etc.).

The early default two and a half hour running time of his career could be exhausting, especially in the case of 1941

Melville - maybe the fact that most women in his films are prostitutes/barely there
Miyazaki - that he keeps retiring

Neil Gaiman, Neil Armstrong makes them feel real. Don't have to call the person with their full name for the film's entirety. Just mention the full name a couple of times and that works, at least for me.
