Have there ever been occasions where you simply did not like a performance from one of your favorite actors? Do you feel too close to them/their work to be able to objectively critique them?  |

Oh God yes.......there's something wrong if you like an actor who is never bad.......that means literally they are never daring to fail.....like who wants that from an artist? That's that "culture of success" nonsense I always talk about......I don't want it in my Rock bands either...... This is the argument I use against Matt Damon all the time........he can be good in 100 roles in the row........he probably will be......he will never be De Niro who could been bad in 100 films ........and might be  ....... I mean I have nothing against him.....but he could never be a "favorite" of mine ....... Seriously |

Gene Hackman has never been bad onscreen. I don't like the idea that some actors who just never whiff don't "dare to fail" or whatever. Some few great actors just have an unerring bullshit-metre and/or God given talent that stops them from being anything less than truthful or in the moment.
I might like some Hackman performances more than others, but has he ever dropped a "bad" performance? No.

I usually find great actors to be more bland than bad at their worst. Some exceptions being Christian Bale in Rescue Dawn, where I thought he actively sucked, Julianne Moore in Magnolia, etc. Fiona Shaw is terrible in The Black Dahlia, an actress I've otherwise always been impressed by. Pattinson is bad in the Twilight films.

I'm confused  Is this suppposed to be Hackman being "bad"? Because I don't see it. In fact, what I do see is him giving genuine pathos to some pretty basic dialogue. The writing is bad, and Hackman is heavy lifting to save it. |

I don't watch every thing my favorites do like a creep  but while I can't think of a performance from them I dislike with a passion/would consider "bad" atm, what Pac said* makes sense... who (and what) does work 24/7 in this universe anyway that we should expect actors to do so? *don't subscribe to that unnecessary jab at Damon ofc, whom after Oppenheimer I gotta say I have a new appriciation for... he really is a stablished, reliable supporting actor now, reminding me of classical folks like William Holden and such. |

Sure. It's a job heavily dependent on collaborators (script, direction, editing, makeup, costuming, lighting) so with enough opportunities there are bound to be times where an actor gets lost in the shuffle. Some actors have cultivated reliable tactics or charisma so they may be less prone to crashing and burning, but then they're usually just nondescript which is bad enough depending on the size of the part.

And the funny thing is he takes more risks and chances than many actors, and still tends to pull them off. Going from Behind The Candelebra to True Grit to The Last Duel is not an actor that sticks to their comfort zone. |

Well like I said I don't dislike him........but he's not a particularly special actor to me...........a lot of people love him...........to me he's a capable, fine actor.........the American Ewan McGregor ............he will never hurt your movie........... but he can't be a favorite for me.............there's just not enough chocolate in his peanut butter for my exotic tastes I guess  |

Because especially on film, a performance can be protected because there are multiple takes, different angles, reaction shots and editing tricks to get what might be considered a "bad" performance otherwise, to the level of bland or passable. There's no such protection in the theatre. Which is why it's so shocking to see an actor like Tom Hanks, who had up till that point been bland on occasion and maybe miscast, but never truly "bad", throw in a real stinker like his performance in Elvis. |

Y'know, having just watched The Taste of Things, I've come to the conclusion that my favorite actress may very well be Juliette Binoche, and no, I haven't seen her be bad in anything. Not that I've studied her entire filmography but still. As for dudes, I think it's Daniel Day-Lewis for me... and I ain't seen him fail either. Eversmile, New Jersey is on my watchlist, though  |

The weird thing with Binoche is I've liked her in everything I've seen her in, but loved her in nothing (even Three Colors Blue, which she's good in). Whereas I'm flabbergasted by Isabelle Huppert's reputation, except for her dazzling work in The Piano Teacher.

I don't think I've seen anything bad from Liv Ullmann but I've never seen any of her non-Swedish films. She could be bad in some of those given that her Hollywood career never really took off and has a very apparent Scandinavian accent, though.
I don't think I've seen anything bad from Sissy Spacek either. If any actress is incapable of being bad it's probably her. She's too naturalistic to be bad in anything. Her eyes make everything she does on screen look like a documentary.
I don't think I've seen anything bad from Deborah Kerr either. She usually played everything with great restraint so she probably couldn't really be bad in anything.
I do think Maggie Smith has a few pretty awful moments in Downton Abbey (esp. in later seasons and the two unnecessary, atrocious movies) but the writing in that show is so inconsistent that I don't blame her. I've never seen anything bad from her outside of that show. Even when the film is otherwise complete garbage (for example California Suite and some Harry Potter movies) she churns out something fun or even Oscar worthy.
I think Montgomery Clift is pretty fucking awful in Suddenly, Last Summer, but given the circumstances he was under it was totally not his fault. Otherwise I love him in everything. Even in thankless roles where he was by no means the focus (e.g., The Heiress) or films I don't jive with (e.g., The Search, Red River) he would shine. I haven't seen Raintree Country though which apparently everyone hates with a passion so he might be bad there.
I don't think I've seen anything bad from Burt Lancaster. He wasn't super convincing as a violent inmate in the beginning of Alcatraz but he made up for it by rocking the shit out of the rest of the film. He's hammy af in The Rose Tattoo but everyone would suck with that shit script.
I find Blanchett pretty bad in Ocean's 8 where she acts like she's too cool for school during the whole time, and she's also quite awful in The Hobbit where her character just seems completely irrelevant (though tbh that whole series is a complete mess). I guess she just isn't very good in blockbusters.
Cotillard is bad in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception, and I blame Nolan. That's about it. She's fab everywhere else.

Blanchett in Carol is like the perfect answer to this. De Niro in Cape Fear is another good one. Don't think DDL is very good in Last of the Mohicans either. Maybe not "bad" just very artificial. Everyone knows I am the forum's resident Portman stan but she has of course been bad a few times. I don't think I've seen anything bad from Deborah Kerr either.  |

i have yet to see gosling be bad in anything. although i think he was serviceable in stay and only god forgives.
while saying that, i haven’t watched gangsters squad, gray man, all good things, and have yet to see any of those tv projects he did early in his career. if i watched those, i’m sure i’d find some bad performances lol.

His latest Oscar nominated performance is bad (his Oscars performance was better than anything he did in the actual film). Like an unfunny high school theater performance. He's also bad in The Ides of March, Gangster Squad, and not very good in Blue Valentine (the nadir of his fake Brooklynite schtick that miraculously went away as soon as Josh Brolin publicly called it out in an interview). |
