I'm not sure overall.... but I think Portman has been relevant in the public eye longer. She had a very lengthy run from 1994-2010 where she was in every major movie there is.

I went to Google Trends and this is what I got. Portman had a headstart on her level of fame (Trends only goes back to 2004 but even still she had a significant lead then). Obviously interest between one or the other spikes when they're in major releases (with Hathaway having the highest post-2004 peak with her 2012 twofer). These days they generally garner the same kind of interest, though I think Portman maintains a slight edge. EDIT: Link was broken, so I fixed it.

I actually think Anne Hathaway is more well-known. Prada and The Princess Diary are both huge internationally, and she was also in some Nolan stuff and Les Misérables.
