In 1974, Sidney Lumet directed the first motion picture version of the Agatha Christine novel. It went on to score 6 Oscar nods (including best actor and adapted screenplay), and won 1 for Ingrid Bergman. It also went on to score 10 BAFTA nods (won 3) and a DGA nod. This version is directed by Kenneth Branagh, and once again, has an all-star (most Oscar-nominated) cast. It definitely has the pedigree for an Oscar contender. Are you planning on seeing it? Do you think it will surpass the original in terms of box-office and awards consideration? Do you think it was a good touch to put in Imagine Dragons in the trailer, and cast Daisy Ridley, in order to appeal to the younger audiences? For those who haven't seen the trailer, here it is: The Trailer

To be frank it shouldn't be hard. The original is not Lumet's strongest of films but looking at the trailer for this one, I'm not sure it'll surpass the 1974 version.

Probably. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of the 1974 film, as good as it looked. The trailer for the 2017 version looks good.

No chance. The original is fantastic, in my Top 100 of all time.
Not only cast and direction were just suberb, but Branagh looks already so ridiculous and just not like Poirot at all. Especially if you compare him to Albert Finney.

Based on that trailer, not a chance.

Only time will tell. However, I wasn't a fan of the '74 version.

I liked the trailer, but no.
I can actually see it being really bad if they mess it up and there is potential they do.

I guess it could. The '74 one didn't exactly knock my socks off, although it was a solid affair no doubt. I just don't think Orient Express is that good a story, which works against all adaptations of it.

If it gets nominated for 6 Oscars and wins supporting actress essentially for a one and done scene, then YES, it will surpass the original.
